Downtown Bicycle Rental and the coastal trail in Anchorage

My bride and I just did HAL's 14 day Alaska itinerary out of Seattle, which includes a full day in Anchorage. I’d like to recommend reasonably priced, very helpful Downtown Bicycle Rental, (907) 279-5293 · 333 W 4th Ave; and the coastal trail. My wife was very nervous about riding a tandem, but they worked with us until she was comfortable, and we had a great experience and feeling of accomplishment when we made it up the hill the last half mile or so of the trail. There are many places to stop and watch critters, take in scenery and get a little history. The cost is much less than a budget shore excursion, and you get great exercise to boot!

My friend and I also rode the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. It was great! The scenery and views were awesome! We ended up going a little further than we thought and rode about 30 miles round-trip. We saw several moose right along the trail and even a porcupine. Never having ridden mountain bikes, we weren't familiar with how to properly use the gears and had to walk our bikes up a couple of the bigger hills, but we thoroughly enjoyed our ride and would do it again in a heartbeat! We were very tired though after getting up at 4:30am, flying in to Anchorage then hopping on bikes and riding 30 miles!
