Cell Phone Use in Alaska
Okay, I know this is going to be a hard question to answer since it is so specific to carriers, phones, area, etc.... BUT i have to try!
Does anyone know if I will be able to use my Cell Phone in port on my upcoming cruise? We'll be visiting Juneau, Skagway, and Ketchikan. I have the most recent Sprint Android phone. On the coverage map, it shows it is an Off-Network Roaming. My plan includes roaming so I am not worried about the cost, just wondering if I will get a strong enough signal to call home and check in. Anyone out there have Sprint and been to those ports?
If not, since they are US ports, would a regular calling card be a good idea? I don't need to call home daily, but want to at least check in and talk to my kids a couple times. The kids can't read my emails yet, only Grandma. :)
All major providers offer service in Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Anchorage.....etc. (Verizonwireless, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile)
In the ports you will have a strong signal.
I have Verizon and there is no roaming charges in coastal Alaska for voice, data and text.
These towns aren't as "remote" and isolated as you think. Especially Juneau and Ketchikan. Even though the only access to places like Juneau is via ship or plane they are a fairly large town. They even have Costco. :)
It was about 10 years ago I called my best friend from atop the Mendenhall Glacier. He had always wanted to see Alaska and I beat him to it.
Perfect, thank you!! I was hoping that would be the case, but when I looked at the coverage map for Sprint, it looked like it could go either way. It will make me feel better for leaving the munchkins at home if I can talk to them when we're in a port. :)
best cell phone
Can anyone suggest the best cell phone carrier to use in Alaska?
