Default Alaska Maritime Highway

If I'm traveling solo, I wonder if using the Alaska state Maritime Highway would make sense. I haven't written to them, but it doesn't really look like it would save money starting from Washington State vs. a normal cruise. I guess it makes sense if you are transporting a car? Am I reading things incorrectly again?

Has anyone ever taken it?
