Default Alaska Cruise Experience

We are going to AK in June 2015 . We have been on several Caribbean cruises , so we pretty much know what to expect . will we be able to wear shorts or do we need pants , flip flops , sunglasses , etc ... i dont want to be dressed for summer and its winter ! Also the activities i know carnival is the Fun ship but have you found that different ports and dif intenery make for a different kind of party .. All the cruises we went on were Caribbean or Bahamas so , we had reggae and jazz on cruise out of New Orleans and mardi gras parade. I love doing on ship activities , so trying to get an idea , what kind of party to expect. . and dont want to under or over dress !

An Alaska cruise is so different from the Caribbean cruise. Usually, at every port people get off to explore Alaska and all it has to offer. Yes, depending on the temps. you may be able to wear shorts, but pretty much plan on pants and sweat shirts and dress in layers and peel off as needed during the day. You can also expect to see some rain, so some kind of rain gear would be a must to pack.

I would suggest on reading up on all the ports you will visit and decide what excursions you want to do, be warned, they are pricey, but this kind of trip is a once in a lifetime trip, so plan accordingly and what your pocket book can handle.

YES, to everything Donna said. We just got back in August from an 11 day Sea/Land tour. It was an amazing trip but so very different from a Caribbean cruise.. No music on deck that I ever saw/heard. Most people leave the ship to explore during each stop. At night it's very breezy and cold/cool so very few people were on deck then either. They showed a movie and the ones that were on deck were wrapped up in blankets or in the hot tubs. Donna is very correct about being pricey. The excursions can run from 75.00 pp to 500.00 pp depending on what you want to do. Hubby took a flightseeing tour to Mt McKinley and it was 498.00. I encouraged him to do it because I knew I would NOT be doing it and he really wanted too. We did a Floatplane Flightseeing in Ketchikan and it was over 400.00 for the 2 of us. Other than scaring me to death, and it was raining/foggy it would have probably been worth it. We saw pretty much nothing and no money was refunded. I would have kissed the ground if it hadn't have been raining sideways when we finally landed. Hopefully we are going to be going again in 2017 with some friends. I loved it that much The key is to plan ahead as much as you can.. Book your excursions and pay for them individually and try to see as much as you can afford. Also, one HUGE thing about an Alaskan cruise..... the age group is A LOT older than a Caribbean cruise. Just sayin....... The biggest party I saw was the 70's party in the Centrum...

First, talk to your Cruise Specialist, preferably one who's been there done that so they can provide alot of very helpful information. Also, as was already stated, do your homework on each port, so you'll know what you want to do. But it is very important to have a plan as there's alot to see and do in the magnificent State.

We did a 14-day cruise tour and it was awesome! Trust me when I say you'll really want to do some excursions in order to take full advantage of your trip.

Yes, some of the excursions are expensive, so you need to pick and choose appropriately. But here's my main suggestion; book excursions through independent companies! There are some really good ones out there and often you'll save money, it'll be much more enjoyable, and definitely not as crowded.

For example, we did the helicopter/dog sled tour in Juneau. The cruise line wanted $100 more per person than what we paid for the exact same thing. When we were in Skagway, we did a tour and we were the only 2 on the excursion. The owner picked us up and instead of the 2-1/2 tour we paid for, she gave us a 6 hour tour that was amazing! Or we could have paid the same amount through the cruise line, been herded like cattle on a 25 passenger bus, and only visited a couple of places.

As for clothing, depending on the time of year, I normally suggest planning to dress in layers. It can be chilly in the morning and evening, yet warm during the day. We love our convertible pants where we can zip on or off the legs depending on the temperature. And don't forget to take a good pair of hiking/walking shoes!

Thank you so much for your replies .. I have done research on the excursion. looking a length and cost also to determine if we would bring the kids to certain ones. One of my kids has Autism and we dont want to be away to long .. Im a nurse ( 18+ yrs ) and so is my hubby ( 12+ ) and Our specialty is Geriatrics .. We like to party a little and i see that they have some dance clubs , i usually drag him at least one or twice during voyage. I so Know this is a once in a life time trip ! I think we decided on a tour at each port . take the kids on 2 or 3 and maybe 1 or 2 on our own .. Im a little scared to do float plane ...plus some make u pay double if u are over 250 ! unfortunately I am ! ! but i think i found some good and reasonable ones .. but i have no issue with saving money , so how do i find out about the independent shore excursions ..

For independent excursions, look at some of the well-known reputable ones, such as Shore Trips. It's important to use someone who has a very flexible cancellation policy in case the ship has a problem (mechanical or weather) and has to miss a port. But there are some very good ones out there.
