Hi! We are two active 28 year old cruising Alaska with Princess from Vancouver to Whittier.
We have doubts in the excursions in 2 ports: Ketchikan and Skagway.
We are not really too much into tours with big groups. However, we have been reading that it is the best way to enjoy the ports for the Alaskan cruise.
In Ketchikan we'd like to see the totems. We don't know if it would be best to get a tour with the cruise or if there is any other way and we don't really get the difference between Saxman Native Village and the Totem Bight State Park. Which would you recommend?
In Skagway we are doubting between two activities:
Glacier Point Wilderness Safari and Glacier Lake Kayak,Scenic Rail & Klondike Summit.
Anyone done any of them and can recommend something?
No need to book ship excursions. Do a little online research and you can find plenty of options. You can use sites such as viator or shoreexcursions'p, or several others. Or just search for "<port name> shore excursions"
I specifically remember many independent companies with booths or storefronts in Skagway.
All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; John Masefield
Carnival: Glory 2004, Destiny 2008, Splendor 2009, Freedom 2011, Valor 2012, Dream 2013
Celebrity: Summit 2011
Princess: Ruby 2010, 2014, Caribbean 2013, Coral 2014, Regal 2014, 2016
Sail Windjammer: Mandalay 2017
Star Clippers: Royal Clipper 2015
No problem with Princess cruises, you walk of the ship at both locations and you can book a tour there and then, no need to book on the ship however the prices are the same! The only advantage booking when you arrive at the dock is, you decide what time and how long you want to do a particular tour. You can get the information on all tours when you arrive on the ship so you will have plenty time to decide what you want
