Am going to Alaska 2016 ,Sept First the land tour starting in Anchorage
Any suggestions what to pack for outdoor excursions and also formal wear for the
leg of cruise with the Star Princess ?. Will come from Austria and will be allowed only
45 pounds of luggage
You're best bet is to mix/match for the "formal" evenings, since you have the luggage weight limit. As for excursions and port days, layering is the way to go....Mornings will start off chilly, but as the day goes on, it will warm up. Be sure to take some kind of rain gear, chances are, you will see some....Tee-shirts and sweat shirts will come in handy and you can take off outer layer as day warms up....Have a wonderful time.
We did our 14-day cruise/tour the end of August - beginning of September. And as Donna stated, we took layers. A rain jacket is a must, although we only encountered rain once on our trip. Then a long sleeve shirt and a sweat shirt. As for pants, we took the convertible pants that have a zipper so you can turn them into shorts, if needed.
And as for formal nights, they're not as formal there as there are in other places. I took my normal pants and shirts that I wear every night for dinner and simply put on a tie for formal night. Saved not having the weight of a suit.
As for shoes, I took a really good pair of hiking shoes that I wore for traveling and then a pair I wore for dinner every night.
We've traveled all around Europe several times, a few for over a month at a time, so we've gotten really good at packing one suitcase. It's all about functionality and packing smart than it is about taking alot of things you'll only wear once or twice and really don't need.
As I always say, pack half of what you think you'll need and it'll be twice as much as you will actually need.
Then the other part of that statement I like to make; take twice as many pictures as you want to take and it'll be half as many as you should have taken.
