I have made 11 voyages on this line. Working cargo-passenger combo. Ships are spotless. No entertainment. Food is enough, heavy on fish, not elegant. You must be able to concentrate on unbelievable scenery. Breakfast & lunch buffet. Evening food is served to you. Not dressy, except jacket at night. I have made this trip at all times of the year, even in January ... does that tell you something? To watch loading & unloading, get cabin on left. For quiet side of ship, get right side cabin. Please understand that this line is not for partygoers.
We sailed on the Finnmarken from Bergen to Kirkenes and back [eleven days] in 2002 and found it to be a wonderful experience. The ship was brand new and Hurtigruten have even newer ships in service now. Accommodation is very comfortable and the meals were beautiful with a strong Norwegian flavour. There is not a lot of entertainment on board as the ship is a working vessel but the magnificent scenery is there to be enjoyed day and night [if you travel in summer]. We did all the optional excursions [it's cheaper if you pay before you leave home] and enjoyed every one. It is a great experience to stand on North Cape, and to sit on deck in the light of the Midnight Sun. This was our first cruise and it certainly gave us the taste for doing others.
