Default single occupancy cabins!!!!

All the lines need to hop on the singles wagon, not everyone wants a stranger or a cabin mate, I would much rather have a teeny cabin to myself, or lose the singles supplements on cabins that would sail empty at the last minute.

Thats a good idea. There was another topic about having small cabins for one person take up half the space of a double cabin rather than charge a single supplement. Your other idea of dropping the single supplement when there are cabins left over at the last minute is also a good idea. Cruise ships can implement the later now. There is now a secuirty issue with last minute travel. Perhaps people who want to travel at low rates at the last minute could register with the cruise line ahead of time with their name and passport number. That way homeland security could put them on an approved last minute list.

You must remember that cruise lines are in the business to make money. So the idea of selling left over cabins as singles would not fly. Besides if you can not afford a single
cabin once per year that is not the cruise lines problem, going on vacation is a luxury not
a necessity.

Shipbound- A cruise ship will make more money selling the left over cabin to a single person without the double charge then not selling the cabin at all. As to your other comment going on a vacation is not a luxury and any way thats not the point. The point is that there shouldnt be discrimination against singles. Single persons should be charged the same amount per person as everyone else not double.

I believe the cruise lines are sailing at over 102% capacity, so it would appear there aren't too many empty cabins.

I agree on the new ships or when one is in dry dock put 4 or 5 single rooms per ship. I would even pay for a balcony single.
Or during the off season(hurricain season) sell a few of the cabins to single with no up charge.

Maybe they could do something like the suites some colleges have. Have two small single cabins with a shared bath? Then single people wouldn't have to share a cabin with a stranger, just coordinate bathroom times. (Of course people would have to be considerate.) Maybe even have a shared balcony. Then the cruiseline could charge a single person half of the double fare.

Since I'm not planning on sailing single (I hope!), I don't know if this would work or not.

What do you singles think?

I agree with 'shipbound'. The lines are not going to expend the time and effort to administer selling a possible few left over cabins at the last minute to accomodate singles.

Most ships do sail at over 100% capacity, based on double occupancy, so they aren't sailing with too many empty cabins.

I do like the idea of creating more of the 1A type cabins that are single cabins with upper and lower berths. They may not be the most luxurious but they could be had for a single fair instead of the high 200% single supplement that many have to pay.

Take care,
Mike

Ship bound most cruise ships do not sell out, singles are discriminated against in this county we pay higher taxes then married couples as well and this is not fair. The singles supplements are out of hand, I can afford them but I won't pay them because it's like paying the marked up retail prices for something that gets discounted. I know a rip off when I see one ,and having half the cabin price would be less a loss to the cruise lines then sailing with empty cabins which they do all the time. I do my homework on the internet for travel prices, and for shopping at home for just about everything and I never ever pay full price when I can get the same thing for less. Im about to pay double. Hotels charge less when you book alone then when you book for more then one person cruise lines should be the same way.

I am all for more available single cabins. Having more available to start with or making cabins "single" at the last minute.

Sorry, singles do not pay more in taxes than married couples! They may pay a higher percentage of their pay in taxes but so do medium wage earners compared to wealthy wage earners.

Thomas

Ah, the ugly head of the singles surcharge monster once again rises from the dark pits of inequity. I will be partaking in my 7th cruise in December as a solo traveler. It will be my 5th cruise with one line. There is a reason for that, I travel with the folks that are most accomodating to single travelers. This also extends to hotels. A bad taste rises when I see the term "PPDO" as it essentially doubles the costs of vacationing for the single traveler. There are ways around the "surcharge". The first being, do your home work. I do a lot of online research on air, hotel and cruise rates and, all considered, end up paying about the same as one-half the costs of a couple doing the same vacation. In the cruise industry, it seems no price is set in concrete and I don't mind traveling "off season" being retired. Don't be timid about discussing more economic cruises. If a cruise is not fully booked, the cost may be "whittled down" even further. You won't know until you ask. Oh, my cruise in December is costing me less than half of what it would have cost me if I were sailing this Summer. Happy sailings.

As pointed out, ships sail at capacity so they are not about to just let singles have double cabins at single rates. I do think that the cruiseline should make an effort to provide at least a dozen cabvins or so that are indeed singles. They might actually earn more than a single booking the single supplement due to the increase of singles cruising.

Princess - this if for you!!!!! Do NOT charge double port charges and taxes and fees for the single traveler! No other cruise line does.....and it is one reason that besides an open booking that I have with you that I have not booked another Princess cruise.......I hate being taken advantage of and that is exactly what you are doing. No other cruise line charges single travelers DOUBLE port charges, taxes and fees. Quit being so greedy!

I was not aware of that Lisa! Something that should really not be done by anyone! Maybe you can send an e-mail to Art S here and he can take the complaint directly to them!

Hear, hear Lisa. Princess is just plain blatently flat out ripping people off by charging double port charges for singles. Maybe it is a 2nd rate cruise line after all.
