Default How many people would book a SMOKING ship?

Just to play devil's advocate, would you book a ship if smoking was allowed on most of the ship? Non-smokers could have one or two bars and one side of the pool deck.

I think a smoking ship would fill up fast !

Uh Fern, that is how most of them are now isn't it? Now if you said smoking allowed in the dining room and show lounges, I would avoid it and really doubt that it would ever see my presence. I go for less smoking instead of more.

Hi Jim,

As a non-smoker it may appear to you that most ships are "smoking"! You probably don't have friends and family who smoke . There are actually very few areas that are "smoker friendly".

Maybe parts of two regular bars, the cigar bar (ick, IMO), and part of the pool deck, where non-smokers go into their "hand flapping, coughing" mode if they even see a cigarette .

I'm happy for you that you don't smoke (now?), but the last time I checked, it wasn't illegal (yet) .

How may fewer smoking areas could there be, unless it was a "non-smoking" ship???

You may smoke in all of your cabins, in all areas of the exposed decks, all of the casino and half or more of all the lounges as well as the main atrium and interior promanade and yes the cigar bar. The only places that you cannot smoke are the dining room and food areas and the main show lounge and the spa and gym. Even in the buffet area they usually allow smoking on one side of the ship. That seems more than fair to me. Yes I am an ex-smoker and have been for about 15 yrs now after smoking for almost 33 yrs. I know how hard it is to quit and I never object to anyone that tries to be considerate when they smoke or smoke in areas that allow it. If the smoke bothers me, I simply move as they are allowed to do so there. Smoke never bothered my for almost 10 years after I quit but over the last five I can smell a smoker from 10 paces indoors and not much less outside. I really does make me feel ill. Then again, that is still my problem whenever they are in an allowed area and I never make a scene even if they are not respectful smokers. I usually will point out that smoking is not allowed if they appear to wish to remain in a non-smoking area but never argue if they get nasty. Most do not but some do. There are unreasonable people on both sides unfortunately. I simply cannot eat smelling smoke nor do I wish to sit in an enclosed show room with someone smoking next to me. I think and hope I am being reasonable and only ask those that smoke to also be reasonable.

I would, but on the other side, They need to bring back a completely non-smoking ship too. My husband won't cruise with me due to him being a born-again non-smoker.

I am afraid that so long as smoking is legal, (and it will be for a very long time), that the chances are slim. While many people like them as individuals, most groups will not book them as someone is the group always seems to be a smoker and that pretty much kills the totally non-smoking ship. That was pretty much the demise of the CCL Paradise, no group bookings.

Hi Jim,

You must have cruised different lines than our family and friends!

We've always "assumed" (yes, I know) that if there are no ashtrays available, it's a non-smoking area They certainly don't want people throwing their "butts" off of the ship!

We've all found that, of course, you can smoke in your cabin, on one side of the pool deck, in the casino, and, besides the cigar bar (ICK, again!), two bars.

I've never seen anyone smoking in the atrium or promenade or on "all of the exposed decks" or in the buffet area. Maybe I never looked???

The point of my post was, would you book a ship where you could smoke anywhere. Obviously, you wouldn't, but others might enjoy not having to "hunt" for a place to smoke ,

I'm sorry, but when you said a "smoking ship" I thought you meant a ship that was on fire! I definitely would not book one of those.

Seriously, most ships do allow smoking but in very limited areas. This means they are most tolerable. If you have ever been on a European ship you know the difference. I have been on truly Euro ships like Festivale lines where you could cut the smoke with a knife.

American non-smokers have no idea how truly good they have it.

Oh, Paul,

I love your "dry" sense of humor I don't think I'd book a "ship on fire" either

I was just curious as to how many people would sail on a ship where you could smoke anywhere you wanted, since the "Would you book a non-smoking ship" thread had so many replies.

I made it a "Poll" because I think there are possibly many people on these boards who smoke, but don't want to say so "out loud" . This way they can "vote" and not be identified

BTW, I've never said whether I'm a smoker or not . You'll just have to guess ,

I'm an ex-smoker and I would definitely book a smoking ship, since all ships are smoking I wouldn't have much choice would I ???

But smoke doesn't bother me as much as perfume......yuk!

Yup, we would......can you imagine not having to deal with any fake coughs or hand-flapping or nasty looks or not so quiet negative comments......heaven for a smoker! There are enough totally non smoking areas nowdays for those lucky enough to be non-smokers.

Yes, smoking is legal...and isn't that a shame! Pity to watch someone who is a true addict struggling to take a few breaths of fresh air while at the same time craving a cigarette with every fiber of their body....

Freedom is precious, yes, but I care more of about my friends and family that I wish this is one freedom of choice which was not available... too bad kids today aren't smarter and more concerned with themselves to stop this nasty habit from continuing...oh well....

I think smokers are generally more fun! I don't smoke, never did, but thinking back on my family and friends, the ones who did smoke always seemed to be more fun and have more fun - and still do.

Go figure! Luckily, smoking doesn't bother me at all and I'm always surrounded by smokers and usually seem to gravitate to them.

So, a smoking ship (not the "on fire" kind), would not bother me a bit.

Yes...bring on a 'Just Smokers' cruise ship....Bet you even they couldn't take it!

But because that isn't going to happen, how about some Non-smoking cabins, like hotel have? We just had a terrible experience with a cabin that was ruined by smoke... the smoke clings to the drapes, curtains, rug, furniture, blankets, pillows, ...I say, "NO SMOKING IN CABINS" either.

Go ahead and flame me!!! I didn't always feel this strongly. we used to feel, as long as smokers indulge on their side of the ship, no problem...I can walk around them..etc. But we found the smokers on our last cruise really intrusive. It ruined our cruise, we stopped feeling so liberal when the subject became personal.

Yes, smokers have their side of the ship, etc. But does the smoke know that? I mean...does the smoke know not to drift over to the non-smoking section? Like is there some invisible wall that the smoke knows not to pass?

I agree bad body odor, perfume etc are terrible too. But at least you can walk away or wash it off. But with smoke...it clings to OUR clothes, hair and anything else it touchs. The smoker may leave, but we're left with the smell and the after effects long after the smoker has gone his/her merry way.

Us non smokers don't have it good when smokers smoke in non smoking sections and ruin our vacation. Security please!

I don't know what ships you cruise on, but on the Noordam the smoke removal/air conditioning systems in the bars will just about suck a wet napkin off the bar.

I'll vote for designated perfume wearing areas too!! I think elevators should be off limits to those who choose to douse themselves with the stuff, just like they're off limits to smoking. There have to be plenty of carcinogens in Chanel #5. P.U.

I totally agree! I'd book a smoking cruise, in fact we always do.

Good pun Paul

Fern, I would not book a smoke anywhere ship because I would be thrown off for all the coughing. I am allergic to cigarette smoke.

You'd have to count me out for the smoking ship. As a non-smoker though, I'm glad to say I haven't had any complaints about fellow cruise passengers who do smoke. They certainly haven't ruined my vacation.

A resounding and joyous YES! On almost all HAL ships smoking has been limited to your cabin and sitting at the bar. Period. We don't drink alcohol and HATE having to "belly up to the bar". Probably as much as non smokers hate us smoking ANYWHERE.

My mom is a very heavy smoker and we have never found that many restrictions on the cruises that we have been on (all Princess or Carnival). The dining room and showroom are always non-smoking, but other than that she has been able to smoke just about everywhere. All the bars have a smoking section (usually one side of the ship), the outer decks all reserve one side for smoking, the cabins are all smoking. On Princess and Carnival, at least, finding places to smoke doesn't seem to be a problem.

But to answer your initial question: Yes, I would book a smoking ship, even if every single inch of the ship allowed smoking. I don't smoke, but it doesn't bother me at all and I probably wouldn't even notice the change.

I find it so comical when they do this! Especially when they don't start the coughing and hand flapping until AFTER they SEE the cigarette, even though my mom has been sitting next to them smoking unobserved for an eternity.

I have never smoked a cigarette in my life, but this little act makes me so want to take up the habit, just so I can light up a cigarette when my mom gives in and self-consciously puts hers out!

Yes, Fieldmouse! Well put! I am allergic to cigarette smoke. It causes my sinus to clog and then my throat gets sore. I am one of those who fans the smoke and coughs when I go through it on ships and I AM NOT FAKING! I would have to take the stairs everywhere because of smoking elevators... well, I just could not function on a ship like that. So, No, I would not book on it.
