I just read this recently and thought that it was a good idea. I've never actually had any serious trouble in ports, but better to be prepared than not.
Prior to your trip, go to travel.state.gov and look up the phone number of the U.S. consulate in each country you will be visiting. Could be particularly useful in countries that do not use English as primary language. They can also help with lost/stolen documents, etc.
Just an idea I thought worth passing on.
That is a great suggestion. The one thing I've noticed that the cruiselines do is they list the cruiseline's agent in that port in their daily newspaper. You can always go to the agent if you have any problems also.
