Default Have you been visited by the upgrade fairy?

Upgrades are a bit of tricky topic.

People book the cheapest inside cabin, and are told they got an upgrade when they move up two decks to an inside cabin (when in fact I'd consider these pretty similar cabins). And though you're up a couple of decks you may have been moved from mid ship to the bow of the ship.

I'd like to hear about incidents where people felt they got "real" upgrades... and why do you think it happened? Was it because you're a long time repeater with the cruise line? a first time cruiser with the line? you booked early? ... or did your TA tell you "they got you an upgrade"?

First HAL cruise, we booked cheapest inside to Alaska. A hard year financially, but we really wanted to go. Got upgraded to exterior called "superior" or something. Anyway, it was the largest cabin we've ever gotten. Only problem was it was on the Promenade deck and early a.m. joggers woke us up. I didn't care, because I could look out the port hole and grab a jacket to run outside if something cool was there. Okay, "cool" is everything in Alaska.

Our last cruise was a first time on MSC line and we booked a guarrentee inside. All our papers we received from them stated the cabin number being an inside on deck 8. At check in when the lady punched in the cabin number she came back with some Italian name, definitely not us. So she then put in our booking number and all she said was of you've been moved to a very nice cabin. We get on board, MSC then has a room steward escort you to your cabin and we were escorted to a balcony (on the Lirica they call them suites).

Only thing we could figure out was the TA I booked with had been working with MSC for years and that had to be the reason.

We will continue to book the guarrentee inside and if we get an upgrade great but don't plan on it.

On our last cruise we had booked a balcony room. My parents had booked a balcony room that was 2 doors down. We booked separetly through Travelocity. When we checked into the terminal we were told that the room we had choosen had been changed and that we needed to speak with a supervisor.
Needless to say we were mad! But then the supervisor brought us all into the VIP check in area (my parents and my husband were Platinum, but we didn't know that meant we could do VIP check in) and told us we had been upgraded to balcony suites!
To this day...we have no idea how or why we got the upgrade. For the longest time, my parents thought we had upgraded us all on the sly, and we thought my parents had done it. But no...it was the "Upgrade Fairy!"

So far I have gotten a mini-upgrade.

I booked a Cat 1A Guaranteed on the Carnival Liberty. Just this week I checked and saw that I have been upgraded to a Cat. 4A. Just one category up. Cat. 4A is also an inside room but it has the two bed which is what I like. The location is on the lowest deck but that is fine with me b/c it means that getting off the ship at port will be a breeze. This cabin is right over the gangway. Also it is towards the front of the ship and further forward of any of the elevator banks so hall noise and traffic will be minimal. I am quite content with its location.

In fact, the price of this cruise dropped a few days ago and I called to get OBC to offset the difference between what I paid and what they are now charging. The PVP initially wanted to give me an upgrade to Cat. 4C but those cabins are in the middle of ship on the Upper Deck which is directly over the Casino, Dance Club, Karaoke. Therefore, I turned down the upgrade and asked for OBC instead which they granted me. This was before I had a cabin assignment.

A day or two later I check and saw I as put in a cabin on the Riviera Deck. If the price goes down again, I will call back and see what type of upgrade they are offering then. I guess the Upgrade Fairy's Escalator has been at work because previously booked cabins are now becoming available.

Since I am a Cat. 1A guarantee does anyone know whether or not I stand a change to get a further upgrade or am I like to keep what they have assigned me thus far -- which may or may not be a better location than any upgrade they are likely to grant me.

At this point, if I can't get a windowed or balcony (not likely), I would just as soon stay where I am.

Since I am a solo, I always assumed they would not waste an gigantic upgrade (balcony) on me even though I am a frequent cruiser (not quite platinum).

Booked Norwegian Sea "run of the ship" inside cabin, and was assigned an outside with an obstructed view (lifeboat). No idea why, just my 2nd NCL cruise.

Booked inside category on Golden Princess and was bumped up again to an obstructed view again!!

I consider myself VERY lucky for those two instances.

My last 4 cruises I have book inside guarantee - the cheapest. Three out of four times I was upgraded to a higher floor, but still an inside.

I have had two upgrades - from an inside cabin to a balcony (partially obstructed by lifeboats (on Carnival) and RCI from an ocean view to a mini suite on the Navigator. I hope to be visited again on the Freedom out of Miami in three weeks !

This is actually a funny story..

My ex-husband and I took a cruise in 02 to the Bahamas. He had never been, so we booked a guaranteed cabin. Our TA told us that we had rec'd an upgrade, but it wasn't stated as to what kind. I assumed it was a balcony or a window at least.

So we get on the Carnival Fantasy around Xmas time and we get to our cabin..and I prepare him for a fabulous room, with a view and all. We open the door and I see a curtain, by the wall. I tell him to watch out, I'll open the curtain to expose a window....well lo and behold, it was a damn wall. I was mortified, but found it hilarious.

Another cruise I took with my mom and aunt, we were upgraded to a lovely little balcony. It was nice.

This will be our 3rd Carnival cruise and 2nd time we booked a TBD (open, no cabin assignment),
our carnival agent said last year that is the best way to get an upgrade, last year no upgrade...this year we have gone from 6A (ocean view)
to 8C (ocean with balcony)!!!
Can't wait to have a little quite time on the balcony.
Now I can say "Upgrades do Happen"!!!

On my 5/26/07 Liberty cruise I booked a Cat 1A guaranteed. I was initially given an upgrade to a Cat. 4A but b/c of all of my shenanigans with OBC and the like, the upgrade with taken back. I did not learn my cabin number until the night before the cruise. As it turned out, I did not receive an upgrade. I was given a Cat. 1A cabin. It was located on the Riviera Deck. This was my most favorite cabin ever.!!!!!! It had only 1 twin bed (I cruz solo) and therefore had loads and loads of floor space. It was right next to the aft elevators but I never heard the elevators from my cabin. The aft elevators take you directly to the aft pool, the buffet and the dining rooms. Also the aft elevators are probably the least used so they are therefore the fasting.

I am soooo glad I did not end up with a so-called upgrade. From now on when I book this class of ship, I will always look to book Cabin 1426!! If I can reserve this particular cabin, I won't need or want an upgrade. It was the best ever.

I was going to book a Cat 8B on Carnival Victory for our January cruise. I went to the TA to book it and I was told that because I was a past passenger I got an automatic two deck upgrade, so went from a Empress Deck (8B) to a Verandah Deck 8 cabin. I also booked my next cruise when they posted their 35th anniversary sale. I booked a 8C and got a two deck upgrade to 8E (Panorama). The price turned out to be less than it would have costed at regular price cat 8C

The upgrade fairy doens't like me either. Never NEVER been upgraded except from one floor to another under the same category. Its sorta like Bingo - I don't play because I know I won't win and the only way I would win with an upgrade is to buy it myself! Some people have all the luck.

Upgraded on Voyager out of Miami from a balcony to Grand Suite. It was awesome...

Recently had booked Inside Guarantee for 1A price and got upgraded to a balcony. This was on Carnival. We are Platinum, so maybe that was the reason.
Also, have been upgraded twice on HAL from inside to outside cabin. First time was on our first HAL cruise.
I never, ever assume we will be upgraded and I, too, am a fan of the 1A cabins. Just get me on a ship and I'm a happy camper....um, make that a happy sailor.

My best upgrade was on Carnival Paradise in 2004. We recieved an upgrade from 6A gty to a 11 or 12 (I don't know the difference) balcony suite. It was so great and will probably never happen again.

I think it happened because I have medicine that requires a fridge and the fantasy class ships at this time only had fridges in the suites (no 8As). The ship must not have been filled so instead of bring in a fridge to a 6A they moved me to the fridge. A year later we took another cruise on a fantasy class ship and they squeezed the fridge into the 6A room. My hubby was bummed he wanted another upgrade.

i always cruise hal, always my 'neighborhood' is A deck outside, midships. i am happy there. if i were upgraded to, say, lower promenade with people parading outside my window i would refuse. i like my unobstructed window on the sea, low down, where i can sit in the window at night with the lights out and meditate on the beautiful sea.

Yes, last year. Had a balcony on Lido, upgraded, no charge, to suite on Empress. Tough thing was, my husband likes Lido! I was very grateful for the gift however. Only cruised 2X with Carnival before this. Found out three days before sailing. Didn't book a guarantee; booked a specific cabin.
We sail different lines usually just to see what's out there. That was a really fun cruise!

On our first two cruises (both on Valor),we booked an oceanview on the Riviera deck. On the second one we were upgraded to a mini suite on the Empress deck. They knew what they were doing because we absolutely have to have a balcony ever since.

On our first Alaska cruise on Celebrity Mercury we were upgraded from a Cat 1 to a Sky Suite. That was a nice upgrade.

On the Ocean Princess we were upgraded from a Cat BA to a Cat AB suite. That was also a nice upgrade.

On the Norwegian Star we were upgraded from a BA to an AF mini-suite.

I really think it is the luck of the draw. We haven't been upgraded in a number of cruises and I don't mind. I always book in the category I want and if we go up that's great.

I also don't consider it a true upgrade unless it is from balcony to suite (mini suite). We only book balconies but I would consider inside to outside and outside to balcony a true upgrade.

Take care,
Mike

Have cruised 3 times, first one with Noregian, other 2 with RCL, and have never been upgraded, now cruising March 5th on Celebrity Century to Key West and Cozumel and wanted to know how good or bad Celebrity is for upgrades, this is our Valentines Day and 35th wedding Anniversity gift to each other, and had to book an inside I guess is on level 10 because of financial reasons, but would love to at least have one of those cabins with the large windows, of course it would be great to have one with the balcony but i would be happy with one of the large window ones. If anyone knows the trick to this pls let me know, should I ask outside when checking in, should I go to customer service inside the ship, what is the best strategy.? TKs

So far as I know, asking doesn't work unless you are willing to pay for the upgrade. Especially once you get there. We call it the upgrade fairy because it only seems to happen as if controlled by magic. If there was a trick, wouldn't everyone use it?
I would!

Only within the same category, once from a inside K to an inside II and once from a balcony bd to a bb at no extra charge. Never have heard from the upgrade fairy yet.
