Default Did we mess up?

Friends cruise - first for most of us - booked 3 cabins with a TA on Carnival. When we were in the office, she gave us the prices, we wrote it all down, and paid $400 deposit a piece. Then the "paperwork" came to us in the mail... everything she said wasn't correct. I went to her today and she said the paperwork was correct, not what she had quoted us originally. Here are the issues:
1) She said one cruiser would get a discount because she is over 55; now says there is no over 55 discount
2) She said the prices she gave us the day we paid deposits included travel insurance; now they don't (so we owe $60 more than we thought we did.)
3) She said originally the price included pre-paying gratuities of $50 (5 night cruise); now she says that is not included (so an additional $50 to the bill.)
I don't know what to do. I don't know if I'm allowed to mention her agency's name, but it is a huge national agency. I can swing the extra $110 but one of us is gonna have trouble... I haven't called to tell her yet; hoping I could get advice and "fix it" first!

Sounds like you found a winner of a TA.

Since all you've given is a deposit, I'd cancel, get the refund, and look for a good travel agent. There's plenty out there!

I'm a bit distraught, Kuki. We so thought we were doing everything correctly... now I'm afraid if we cancel, we won't get as good a rate (even with the increases we didn't know about)... and I'd think there would be a penalty and we'd lose some of the deposit... and we booked so we'd have all 3 of our rooms together, and I'm afraid we wouldn't get that again... oh, I just need to vent I guess. I don't want to have a bad taste in my mouth; we've all been so excited. I just am disappointed that what i thought was a very reputable company seems to have at least one employee who doesn't know what she's doing (I prefer to think that she is incompetent as opposed to having deliberately misled us.) We're gonna need the cruise just to get over planning the cruise!

I'm not too sure about your travel agent either. Those errors shouldn't not have happened, either those things were included or there was some misunderstanding...

Good advice Kuki.

golC:

I would cancel the cruise and go with a different travel agent. If this agent has not done things correctly at booking who knows what will happen later.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH DROPPING AN AGENT AND CANCELING AND REBOOKING A CRUISE.

The guilt you feel about it is nothing compared to what you will feel knowing you were manipulated into a deal you didn't want or wasn't what you agreed to.

I'd rather pay more and know it than pay less and have it jacked up after the fact.

Take care,
Mike

i totally agree with my fellow cruisemates, get yourself another travel agent. I would also shop our site, go to cruise shopping, we deal with very reputable agencies. As for any type of cancellation penalties, you have up to 90 days prior to departure to get your full refund from the cruise line.

You could shop the cruise to see if you can find rates you like, and cabins next door to each other BEFORE you cancel your existing booking.

I would also see if the TA is with CLIA. Being a member makes no guarantee of performance but the TA you used certainly isn't very good.

Edit : I posted the above then read the following very good post:

All of these councilors have at least been on multiple cruises. The higher the certification the greater number of cruises. Most MCC agents have more then enough cruises under their belt to qualify for ECC but have not taken the coursework or exams for ECC certification

There is nothing worse than talking with an agent or online sales person who has never set foot on a cruise ship.

Take care,
Mike

I agree that you should cancel your booking with that TA and find one that you are comfortable with. Since I vacation so often, which costs $$$ I believe the relationship with my TA should be like that, that I have with my doctor. I totally trust her bookings and recommendations. She knows how I like to spend my money and my time. Don't know if I can give a shout out to her agency...but HELEN you ROCK!!

IF YOU CANCEL SHE IS ONLY LOSING HER COMMISSION...awww...but it's your vacation and your money.
