Default Do excursions REALLY fill up?

I am booked on a transatlantic curise and am cusious about booking excusrions. Do the excursions in Europe really fill up or is the cruise just trying to generate a buzz to fill the seats? I think the pricing isn't too bad given the current exchange rate but am curious if they just keep adding capacity as people book or if I have the potential to be without a tour.

In some places I am quite comfortable getting off the boat and finding my way. But in Rome and Florence (both far from the dock) I am leary about taking a train or taxi and hoping to see the city and be back in time.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

In any port that you have some distance to travel to see anything worthwhile or are unfamiliar with it is best to book with the ship. This way if there are any delays either with the ship or vendor you will not be left behind.

While I haven't cruised Europe yet, having booked excursion in theCaribbean and Alaska, yes, some of the popular excursion do fill up. I've had instances where I wanted to go at a certain time and couldn't because that time slot was already full.

I'd suggest pre-booking any excursion that you really have your heart set on doing, so you are not disappointed because its full.

Yes! The most popular excursions do fill up. Some even before the ship sails. The excursions you describe are usually the ones that fill up. The farther an excursion takes you from the ship and if they include popular sites the faster they fill up. If you have not pre-arranged a good private tour then I would advise you to use the ship's tour. The reason for this is the same as what Phil & Liz said. With a ship's excursion they will hold the ship for you or make sure you are transported to the next port.

Take care,
Mike

Even though the shore excursion you want may not be full, some preferred departure times may already be taken. We book in advance all shore excursions that we think we are interested in. Should we change our mind, we can usually cancel as late as the night before, and get a 90% refund. We consider the 10% penalty as an option to hold the spot that we want.
