Default How are hotel/cruiseship glasses washed?

Okay, my daughter e-mailed me an article about hotel drinking glasses and how they are washed...or not. They placed cameras and the results were quite shocking. Bottom line--have you ever seen clean glassware on the steward's/housekeeper's cart in the hall? Are they being wiped out with your face cloth and dried with your towel? Do they carry special glass cleaning supplies? If anyone really knows the answer please put my mind at ease....or not.

On our last cruise I saw the room stewards taking clean glasses from a plastic dishwasher tray. So I assumed that they had been washed by a commercial dishwasher along with all of the other glasses on the ship. This is another good reason to never remove the tips from your sign and sail account lol!

Hotels.... be afraid, be very afraid!

Have you guys ever checked the coffee/tea mugs in the buffet BEFORE you pour your drink in it?

I kid you not but I cannot recall how many times I have come across mugs at breakfast that have lipstick marks!

Without fail, I check the rim of each and every mug/glass/cup before I pour anything in it, period!

Check it out next time you cruise.

Yes, it is gross how the hotel maids "washed" the glasses with dirty towels, chemicals labeled "not for human consumption," and just rinsed the glasses with water.

If I were you, buy some plastic drinking glasses from the store before you leave and use those to drink while in the hotel. I trust the ship, but yes, occasionally reside is left. The dishes are not washed by hands but go through a dishwashing process and if the stuff is stuck on you findout about it when you grab a plate or a mug....As for lipstick, I watched a show on how it is made and it doesn't puprise me at how it can stick and stay and not wash off!!!!!

Sorry to make you sick, but I guess that in essence could be exactly what you would get from dirty glasses. I have toured a ship's galley and have no trouble with their washing/sanitizing process. I'm pretty sure that they also keep clean glasses in their little storeroom. Hotels I'm not quite so sure of. Last weekend we stayed at a hotel for one night and I was actually quite relieved to see that they had disposable coffee cups for the in-room coffee and plastic tumblers sealed in plastic wrap in the bathroom. It may seem tacky but beats a dirty cup any day. Our bathroom glasses on the Summit were immaculate, and seldom noticed the odd bit of residue on a coffee cup or silverware. No problem just ask for clean ones. That can happen with the best dishwasher. I've never seen lipstick on a mug or glass. It's the bathroom glasses this post was concerned about and for which I will be diligently checking.

I do just as I do at home.
Stick my head in the sink, grab some water from the stream, swish it around and spit it out. Don't use a bathroom glass.

The old style lipsticks are the hardest thing to get off of glasses or china. They will stay put through toughest sanitizing dishwasher. Have to be rubbed off by hand. I think that they are wax or oil based, but while newer ones aren't that bad, old ones were made to not come off!

And then explain the 'protein' comment.
Thanks

Default Dirty glasses

Probably one of reasons for NORO spread. Been on lots of cruises; would buy a ships logo thermal cup when available. I now bring one & always use in buffet on each cruise. Have not become sick yet.

That's why I always use a straw !

I do bring my own travel sheet sack. I got it online from T----l S----h.

I found out that I am allergic to the comforters (probably feathers). I also saw that documentary about what is on the bedspreads.

I also wear slipper socks in the cabin. DH thinks I overreact, but I have a medical condition, and I can't afford to get sick.

Don't want to either.

The bad part of this thread is that it inspired me to go to Snopes and see if that motel video was for real.......
It was!
I think I'll take some of the good advice here. Plastic and straws seem like a good answer

They let the little puppy dogs and kittens lick them clean, wipe them and reset them on the shelves. I have a copy of a computer screen cleaner where the puppies lick the comouter screen clean from the inside. It works.

Along those same lines - anyone see the report on lemons in resturants and bars? http://www.ksl.com/?nid=172&sid=2693500 - here's the video link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyZCqL1doog.

Since I've heard about this I haven't had lemon in my water. Thinking of getting one of thos "real lemons" to carry in my purse - YUK!

I thought I was the only crazy person that does this. I absolutely can not stand to go anywhere without my slippsers. And my DH thinks I'm over-reacting too!

Ever walk around a hotel room in white socks and then look at the bottoms of your feet?

I always pack flip flops!

And flip-flops can also be worn in the shower, which is probably where you would be most likely to pick something up, in terms of your feet (like a fungus, for instance).

Yep.....everything gets wiped down with lysol cleaning wipes before I allow anyone to enter the stateroom (i.e., telephone, remote control, light switches, toilet handle, etc.).!

Default Pack Lysol Wipes & Wash Glasses Yourself

I always pack lysol wipes to wipe everything down in hotels/cruise cabins. Hadn't before..but after seeing the hotel news story...will use hot water and soap before drinking from a nondisposable glass.

I also wear flip flops in these places.
