Default Tender at Cozumel?

I heard from someone who recently came back from a cruise to Cozumel - just this past week - that they had to tender there and were at least 5 miles out - That doesn't sound right. The only time I was at Coz and it was several yrs ago, I don't remember tendering. Any ideas?

Cozumel docks were hurricane damaged and not yet completely rebuilt. You might have to tender depending on how many ships are in port that day but it certainly will not be from 5 miles out.

Thanks , I've already checked and there are 5 ships scheduled to be in port. I didn't think 5 miles out was reasonable.

They can handle five ships, but just barely. Everything has to be just right such as the size of ships that day, construction on Puerto Maya pier which is next to the International pier, etc. When I was in Coz last there were five ships and one did have to tender, but it did so into the downtown ferry pier and anchored just off shore.

So you have a better than 80% chance you will be docked.

Thanks for the information - I just couldn't imagine being tendered out very far - that would take up time from the excursions!! I appreciate the responses that I received - CruiseMates is awesome!!!!

We were on the Navigator in August of 2006 and we tendered in. We were the only ship in port, but I think we tendered because of how big the ship was.

There were no docks open is why you tendered. They were all still being repaired from the hurricane damage. First one (Punta Langosta) reopened very end of September 2006.

BTW-welcome to CruiseMates.

With two docks available now, it's rare that one is tendered unless there are more than five ships in port. When the Puerto Maya pier is finished being repaired they will have use of all three piers again.

When I was in Cozumel last month, there was one ship being tendered of the five there that day.

We just came back in late December and we docked. There was also a Norwegian ship docked as well.
