Default Cash needed during cruise

Some of you may think this is a silly question, however, this is our very first cruise. We are going on an 11 day cruise to Panama and are not sure how much cash we will need. My understanding is that everything onboard can be charged to the room and the account settled prior to exiting; but I am under the impression we need to tip the crew members with cash and I assume dollars are appropriate, despite the plunging value!

We will appreciate any insight you can provide. Thanks.

You do not have to tip above what is already automatically charged to your account. If you feel that a certain person has done an exceptional job you could slip them something quietly. I believe the dining room folks have to split everything with each level above them, so if you can manage to slip them something directly that would be nice.

It would not need to be cash either. It could be telephone calling cards so they can call home cheaply.

The person bringing your room service should be tipped with cash for each delivery. Not much tho, a few $ is fine.

As everyone says, tips go on the sail and sign card. I don't know your spending habits when on holiday, but if your like mand like to shop, bring lots of money!!!!!! I brought $2400 for my last cruise (sigh) five weeks ago and I only had $168 left and a $1100 sail and sign charge for a seven day cruise.

You will need to consider money for pre/post cruise expenses, casino, and shopping in port.

Happy cruising!

In order for your tips to be automatically added to your bill, you must request it otherwise it's cash. If you prepay or request it to be done automatically you will receive tip vouchers. I always prepay at the time of booking it's easier for us that way. Our cabin attendant and head waiter gets a little cash with their voucher.

Very true, not all the cruiselines do the automatic tipping, some you have to request that they do so. Either way, you should figure $10 per day, per person.

Most Cruiselines have the auto tip system for there employees. You however will need cash to:

Tip Room Service at delivery.
Tip Porters at the pier when they take luggage.
Tip Tour guides on shore excursions.
Possibly taxis and others.

I suggest taking $50 to $100 in small bills $1 and $5 for this purpose.

What cruiseline are you on? Carnival does auto tips $10 per day per person. Celebrity doesn't do auto tips they list suggested tip amounts the below are the suggested gratuities from their website. http://www.celebritycruises.com/befo...and_gratuities
Gratuities
On the last night at sea, it is customary to offer gratuities to staff members you feel have given you exceptional service and personal attention. We suggest the following guidelines:

Staff Member Suggested Gratuity (Per Day)
Assistant Chief Housekeeper $0.50
Stateroom Service $3.50
Stateroom Service (Concierge Class) $4.00
Assistant Maitre'd $1.00
Waiter $3.50
Assistant Waiter $2.00
Butler (for suites only) $3.50

The rates suggested above are per person.

Note: Bellboys are tipped as service is rendered.
