Default Deposit Only?

Should you always pay the deposit and not pay in full when booking well ahead of time, say 9 months out? I heard that if you pay in full and the price later reduces you may have no recourse in obtaining the lowered rate. Thanks,MD.....

I don't see any great benefit by paying in full when you book. I just pay a deposit and the rest when its due...You could be earning interest in the bank until its time to pay the balance.

I was going to pay my Sewptmeber cruise in full when I booked it. The Canadian dollar was at $1.05 to the US dollar, but I opted to pay the deposit only. I then watched our dollar skyrocket to $1.10 and thought it would settle to around $1.05-$1.07, and then pay it off....It didn't happen. I could have paid it off and it would have costed me as much as $100 or mroe less. No, I didn't do that, I waited and the dollar sank and stayed anywhere from par to 0.98 cents. I paid it off at 0.98 cents and it costed me over $150 more.

Moral of the story is, if your American, no worries. If you are Canadian and the dollar is high or going high, pay in full right away!!!!!!

I did buy some US cash when the dollar was at par and it only costed me an additional $4.......

Paying in full is also okay... But for me, I'd rather deposit first..

I've heard many cruise lines won't honor a price reduction once final payment is made.

I agree with Donna, I'd rather have my money sitting in my own account until the final payment is due.

Thank you all, I booked on Hal to Mexico departing in Nov.08 a few months ago and paid the deposit. I then noticed about a month ago the price was lowered $500.00 per pass. I called my TA and got the lowered rate but was informed from the TA that had I paid in full back then I probably would not have been able to recieve the adjusted rate. I could have cancelled but would have lost on the airfare etc. Paying the deposit only seems like the way to go in most cases........MD

I always pay all at once and I watch the prices once they drop I have always been able to get a refund on my money.

On this note, my final payment is not due until 6/5 which that is 3 1/2 weeks. I was intending to go ahead and pay off my cruise but should I really do that? Should I wait until 6/5???

It's up to you, but just like the others, I see no advantage to loaning the cruise line my money for a few months, and especially when they not only do not say "thank you", but make it more difficult for me to get a lowered fare, or to cancel my cruise should something happen. Nope, I'll give them the final payment on the day it's due, and not a day before. 8)
