Default Amtrak to New York?

We are wondering if anyone has taken the Amtrak to Manhattan for their cruise? We live in Harrisburg, PA and with the price of parking and road toll fees, this may be an option. I was told that the train leaves Harrisburg, goes to Philadelphia, then to the Penn Station in New York. I imagine we will need to get a cab from the train station to the pier. Any thoughts on this plan?

1000s have done it. It is a short cab ride from Penn Station to the pier. You just need to make sure you get a train that is scheduled to get into the city early since they are often late.

By NYC you do mean the West Side Terminal and not the Brooklyn Terminal in Red Hook?

Yes, the train station that we want to go to is the Penn Station in Manhattan. I also heard that it may be best to try to get at the rear of the train because then we won't have to put our luggage in the overhead. Is that true? If there is room, it would be convenient to keep it on the floor in front of us.

as long as you allow yourself a good chunk of time from when your train is supposed to arrive to the time your ship leaves you should be just fine

Seems in my experience that Amtrak is always late (except on my Model Railroad, where everything always runs on time 8).) So plan on an early train. If you are going to the NYC cruise terminal on the West side its a short cab ride.

Amtrak is often late in arrival. Considering you will probably be taking more than carryon luggage, I would drive. We've left from West Side piers on cruises. You pull up to the departure area, your luggage is all unloaded (tip), you park your car on a conveniently located dock area, walk back to ship pier, check in, and your luggage is delivered to your room. Parking is usually per day. For NYC, it was not unreasonable. On return, we were off the ship, and on our way in less than a half hour. There are plenty of porters. + I left a bag behind on the dock when we returned. There is a company that handles shipping such things. My bag arrived, totally intact. It was a very positive experience.
