We'll for me it is a no brainer. Cruise A - Conquest.

Many factors of why I choose this one. The temperatures (I love the warmth), the on board credit, and the simple fact - is it worth 400 extra bucks for one extra day (not including the differences in fares, the travel to the port, etc.)

If I ever do an Alaska trip, I would like it to be one of the train excursions with extra stays instead of a cruise ship. There is just too much inside land and different areas that I would want to see rather than just the typical port stops that are the tourist hits.

I guess there are different versions of "No Brainers". To me the Alaska cruise on Mercury is a "No Brainer". Go where you haven't been before. There is nothing to match the scenery of an Alaska cruise. Taking the helicopter tour of the glaciers or the flight seeing tour in Ketchikan are some of the best times I've ever had.

Mercury, while 12 years old, is one of my favorite ships. Beautiful dining room, great food (that may have changed) and a different atmosphere than Carnival. Remember, I like Carnival but I also like a change.

Take care,

I'm with Mike on this one(not surprised, as we normally share a brain ). If you've never done Alaska, this is the year to do it, as it's normally expensive.

Although I am a huge Carnival Fan for the reasons Mike mentioned I would also choose Mercury. After all, you will be on the Conquest 1/17/2010. 8)

Thanks y'all. I think I was leaning towards the Alaska and I am probably looking for some reinforcement or justification for the additional cost of that one. Conquest is easier, but I have been there done that and doing it again as Scurvy points out.

Still looking for opinions. Final commitment date is May 25th.

Go with Cruise C still going to Alaska just not on Celebrity. I took Celebrity Infinity from San Francisco to Alaska at the end of May. We had great weather and saw Humpback whales and Dolphins right from the ship. I hated Celebrity there was nothing to do on the ship and the food in the normal dining room sucked. Seriously how to you mess up Prime Rib???

Default Thanks

Well I have made a decision. Perhaps neither. I booked an Western Mediterranean the week B4 our Transatlantic in November so I'll need the extra $ for shore excursions, etc. on that one. That's 21 days on the Voyager. I may do cruise A anyway just because it's basically already paid.

Thanks for your help. I have committed to an Alaska cruise in 2010 with my extended family and friends as soon as we can get a date finalized. I may still go as a solo this summer to scope it out if a bargain comes along. (I got a quote of $199 yesterday, but I didn't qualify on that but did for a $299 fare.)

Snooze,
Go to Alaska if you can. I hate being cold and had no interest in Alaska. I only went because DH really wanted to. And I fell in love with it. Hard to describe how big it is, and how beautiful. I was in awe a good part of the time and actually wnet back with a girlfriend on a cruise a couple of years later.

What are your ports for the Eastern Mediterranean cruise? I agree with Colorcrazie Alaska is wonderful and unexpected. We got lucky it was like 70s and 80s the whole time in Alaska. We had very light rain in Vancouver. It's strange getting a tan on an Alaskan cruise.

I did type Eastern and I meant Western, sorry Kat. Ports are Barcelona, Naples, Civitavecchia (Rome), Livoro, Villafranche (Nice), Marseilles, Barcelona. I am excited about it.

colorcrazie, yes I want to do Alaska and I'm looking for a summer bargain.

Marty is right I agree with her completely, booked our third Alaska cruise since 2002 for July 4, 2009 out of Seattle on the NCL Star inside passage. This time we are taking 2 of our grandchildren. Each trip you see something different.

Enjoy your Mediterranean cruise this year and your Alaska cruise in 2010.

I have only been to Livoro and Civitavecchia. We did the hop on hop off bus in Rome. We sit on the top level of the double decker bus. It's a nice way to see the city. They give you headphones to listen to the history of each stop. Since Civitavecchia was our cruise's end point we spent a couple of days there and saw the Vatican. If given the choice of hop on hop off bus or Vatican I would see the Vatican again. There is a post office at the Vatican I sent myself a post card from there. It was nice getting back from the cruise and having the card waiting for me.

If you don't go to Florence, then Livoro is a good place to shop. Because Livoro isn't a tourist spot (most people go to Florence or Pisa) things are more affordable there. I got my shoes for 35 euros there in Venice the same shoes were 75 euros. We went to Pisa and it was just okay. It's really touristy with a flea market out front. I wish I would have gone to Florence.
