Default What is your favorite Island in the Eastern Caribbean and We

Hi folks,

I was wondering what everyones favorite Island was in the Eastern and Western Caribbean?

Mine so far are St. Martin in the Eastern and Jamaica in the western. St. Martin is so friendly and diverse because it is half French and half Dutch. We have a great time when we go there.

Jamaica is a favorite for us in the Western Caribbean because of the laid back atmosphere and the great food there. The people, once you get past the vendors at the port are very friendly and helpful.

So what is yours and why?

Eastern would probably be St. Thomas/St. John, because it's clean, and very safe. No hassles, no problems, and absolutely beautiful beaches.
Western is probably Cozumel, because there are so many options at that port. Something for everyone I'd say.

Haven't been to the southern Caribbean yet, though that will change this November. We are going to Aruba, Columbia, Panama and Costa Rica as well as Jamaica again.

I would love to visit Grand Turk, that island looks really nice. So far, my favorite is St. Maarten....Its a tough call though, so many are beautiful, I also love St. Johns.

Tough question Donna! Eastern would be St. Maarten-the Dutch side-with Antigua a close second. Western I'd pick Cozumel. But out absolute fave would be Bonaire in the south. My idea of Paradise.

I am also a huge fan of Jamaica, we originally did our honeymoon in Ocho Rios and then returned there on our last cruise. I can't wait to go back, we might try out another town this time though.

You said Eastern or Western didn't you? If you add in Southern, then I agree with Trip that Barbados is #1. I've never seen such GREAT people and such a beautiful place.

Yep, Barbados is way up there on my list of favorites, but Isle of Marguerite off the coast of Venezuela is my #1 Caribbean. Can't get there via cruise anymore, so I'll go with a tie for Jamaica/Roatan. I'm not big on the Eastern itinerary, but if I had to pick, St. Thomas.

This is really easy for me. St. Marteen is my favorite caribbean port. Of course it's the only Caribbean port I have been to so the list was kind of small. My hubby and I loved St. Marteen the ocean was so blue and pretty. I loved the beach and would love to go back. Maybe even see a couple more caribbean ports. This is a great thread for me to decide which caribbean cruise.

Isle of Marguerite started off with lots of buzz, then seemed to fizzle.from what I had heard.... it was just not up to the standards cruisers expected. Marty you loved it but, was it as I heard?

Trip,
On both of our cruises there, I took the same tour. It went to Taquantar (SP?) Village, which is a town created by a very wealthy man purely to sell and promote the native crafts of all of South America, then to a working farm, and of course, a shopping area. I'm not sure if I would have felt the same way about the port if I had done other tours, but being an arts and crafts junky, I loved the village. They were bringing craftsman in to live there and demonstrate their art, and the range was from museum quality to $1 knick knacks. But, many of our fellow pax who did other things were not entirely comfortable there. The first time, alll of the S. Amer prez's were there for a meeting, so armed soldiers everywhere. The second time, it was not that different from many other ports, so I'm not sure what the problem was.
The other thing that I noticed was that the prices on everything, even street vendors near the ship went way up in between our two visits, which were 2 years apart. Bought a gorgeous single black pearl teardrop necklace the first time for $90. The second time, same jewelry store, comparable was $300.

We've been to Isla Marguerite twice and absolutely loved it. We didn't take any tours-just hung out at the beach. Very pristine, beautiful warm turquoise water, cold beer and snacks under a thatched roof. No vendors wandering the beach trying to sell whatever. All the vendors were confined to the shopping area between the pier and the beach areas, and there were some excellent buys. I got a gorgeous pair of black pearl earings set in sterling silver for $50 ( 2006 I think). I wasn't aware that this island was no longer a port of call for the cruise lines-howcome?

I think that the reason the Isle of Marguerite is no longer a cruise port is because the prez of Venezuela is very anti-American. Don't know this for a fact, but the timing of the election and no more sailings was pretty close. I would still go back if I found out it was available again.
They also had some tours that went onto the mainland when ships did go there. I so wanted to do that, too. Oh well.
