Default Things to do after cruise in Fort Lauderdale

We will be on the Emerald Princess out of Fort Lauderdale on 1/10/09. After returning to the port, we do not have a flight out until 5pm. Does anyone have any suggestions for things to do instead of rushing to the airport? I have heard that FLL is very busy in the hours after the cruises arrive, and we are hoping to avoid dealing with all of this. Does anyone have any suggestions for the EZ checkout at the end, that takes your luggage directly to the airport for you? I believe that we cannot check into out flight until 2pm, so any suggestions to kill a few hours would be great!

I am not an expert, but you can go to the beach, or I hear there is a great little village on the beach called "Old Lauderdale,"

Or you can always go to Las Olas Blvd and jusy hang out, do some shopping, have a really tasty lunch, ride the steamboat and just see downtown Ft lauderdale.

There is a great outlet mall called "Sawgrass Mills" and there are also some flea market types of places. I hope Trip will come along, she knows all this stuff.

The Water Taxi is great. It's the best deal for sure. All day ticket and get on and off all day. You can bring drinks onboard and stop at the next stop and refill. We loved it.

Default Car Rental?

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions! I have read a few things on here about renting a car for the day in Ft. Lauderdale. Does anyone have any experience with this? If we get off the ship by 9am, we will have 6 hours to kill before we can begin checking in for our flight. Renting a car seems like a reasonable option, but I'm not sure how it works. Must the car be picked up from the airport? is there a shuttle from the cruise terminal to the rental car location? Any help or tips would be appreciated!

Since you only have a few hours, I would suggest doing it through the cruise line. That way, you don't have to worry about what time you get off the ship, or your luggage, etc. The Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area is spread up and down the coast. It can take a chunk of time just getting around if you don't know that area. Or, at least choose something not too far from the airport, like Los Olas Blvd or the water taxi.
