Default Dengue epidemic - Traveler Health Alert: On 26.2.2010, Puerto Rico

Traveler Health Alert: On 26 February 2010, the Puerto Rico Department of Health declared that we have a dengue epidemic on the island. Visit the Puerto Rico Health Department "Dengue Watch" web page (in Spanish only) for the latest data on cases across the island. Visit the CDC web site to learn how you can protect yourself from dengue, what the symptoms of dengue are, & what you should do if you suspect that you have dengue.

Could you please give me advice about this notice?

There have been about 1300 cases reported since January 1st. The mosquito that is the primary carrier (Aedes aegypti ) is a "city dweller" so on the low chance that you could contract Dengue Fever it would be much more likely in a concentrated urban area.

This opposite of what you would think and your chances of contracting it on a jungle tour, beach or snorkeling excursion are far lower.

The main thing is to be practical. Even though 1300 cases have been reported among a population of around 4.5 million the chances of contracting it are low, especially if you use mosquito repellent.

Dengue Fever is prevalent in over 100 countries in Central America, South America, Asia and the Caribbean.

Based on this information I would not cancel travel to Puerto Rico but it's up to each individual to make that decision for them self.

Take care,
