Question Keeping in touch by cell phone on board Spirit

I've seen several posts about phone usage in international waters. This may be a little different. We are going to Alaska with a stopover in Victoria with our extended family (17, including little kids). Can we use our cell phones? Will our bills be exorbitant? Can we text? We need a way to keep in touch with each other. Any ideas?

Here are a few suggestions. First contact your cell phone carrier and take a look at their map to see what type coverage they have in the parts of Alaska u will be cruising in. Some parts of Canada will have cell phone service. My iphone worked in Toronto and Montreal; If your cell phone carrier has service in Alaska, then you won't have a problem calling onboard the ship; another option is to have walkie talkies; I have a set of motorola walkie talkies; we set them to a certain frequency that my family and no others will be using; they work great. Check with the cruise line; On Royal Caribbean they have a walkie talkie system that you can rent for the enitre cruise. In addition to talking to the people who have one u can dial directly to your staterooms. Hope this helps.

You've given me good suggestions. I'll contact the cruise line (Carnival) first. I have Sprint but the other family members have different carriers, so even if my cell phone is good to go, theirs may not be.

Remember , no matter which plan or carrier you use the cellphone bill could
be very large . I've heard people on this website and others complain about the bill . On our last Alaska cruise one gentleman said that he paid almost
$1000 USD for a 7 day Alaska Cruise . The cost came to about $10 USD per minute . That included texting and voice . Onshore was cheap but the shipboard rate outrageous.

At least you have some options to deal with prior to your cruise. Good luck.
