Default Were repeater's programs the best marketing tool ever?

Repeater programs are everywhere. Has the implementation of repeat cruiser programs for cruise lines their best marketing move yet?

Do you cruise only one line because they give you a few repeater perks?

A few benefits?

I get a discount on most cruises. I get free internet (very valuable as I try to get work done from sea), free phone time (very nice to call family, work, or just fix airline tickets), free pressing, and free newspapers. They also throw in a special event at sea or ashore (although most are minimal there have been some great ones). Later this year, I qualify for free laundry and free flight deviations.

Yes, many of these benefits are available to suite customers on all cruise lines; however, I am almost always paying for the cheapest cabin on board.

The benefits that I would most like to see added are free cruises (like Seabourn) or periodic free two category upgrades.

There are no repeater programs that have given me an incentive to cruise exclusively with one line. The perks, while some are decent, still don't outweigh the different itineraries, ships and atmosphere that cruising on different lines offer.

I am mid-tier on three or four lines and upper tier on NCL. This is not by a conscious choice. It is just because I have cruised so many times that eventually you ascend in the rankings.

I have also noticed that many of the perks that you receive aren't that great of an incentive anyway.

The one repeat cruiser program that is sorely lacking is Carnival. Where they once had the best program they are now at the bottom of the barrel.

Take care,

I have only been on Royal Caribbean; I like their ships and their service. I am a gold member; but I don't cruise for their perks; I have only used the Johnny Rockets coupon from the booklet; I have not used anything else.

I wish Royal had better cruise perks (at the low end of the rank).

IMHO, Carnival offers the best perks by way of lower fares. I see the fares drop when I tick the box for "previous passenger". I'm all about the money, so show me the money and you'll get my business.

Other than that, I could take or leave most of the programs. I'm still getting to know HAL, but I like that I got a lit of bit of credit from prior sailigns with Princess and Carnival. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I think the cruiseships should be like "vegas" and comp those that are loyal. If I got a call from Royal and they said, we're sailing this week and less than capacity and we want you on our ship and we'll give you a free cruise ..... I'd pay the airfare to get myself to the port, and I'd be a whole lot more loyal for it!
