Angry British american auctions scam

During many our many years of cruising we have bought through Park West several pieces of art work without a problem....fully aware of what we were buying and not ever having a complaint about delivery or service.. Now there is on Celebrity a new company named British American Auctions and let me tell you AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! Parrot Pop spotted a Ted Williams collage on 10/29/10 and I bid and won a print (plus buyers premium and shipping costs, ec. etc. )... WE HAVE YET TO RECEIVE THE PIECES, and they charged our account immediately. They do not return phone calls or e-mails from us. Obviously, this is not a reputable company to deal with for Celebrity passengers. SO BEWARE OF BRITISH AMERICAN AUCTIONS that have replaced Park West.

You should contact your credit card company, since you feel uneasy.

Thanks Trip, we have already contacted Celebrity and will contact our credit card company. There was somebody we met on the cruise who bid on the matching piece of my piece... must write her and ask if she received hers.

Out of interest I was trying to see what part of the company was British, but failed to find anything.

Were the founded in BC, or is the use of the word British used to try & add some sort of credibility to a company? - maybe not such a good idea in the wake of the BP business.
We hadn't heard the name British Petroleum on this side of the water for at least a couple of decades.

Angry British American Auctions on Celebrity

thanks Phil&Liz.... That was very informative, we will also contact the Attorney General of Florida and file a claim, not to mention being in contact with Celebrity, our credit card company. Parrot Pop is pretty tenatious (sp). We neither gamble nor are heavy drinkers and have found through the years that the pieces we have bought through Park West are great memories of our cruises and fun times. These two pieces had special meaning for us, they weren't just souveniers

I don't believe any of the so-called "art" on ships can possibly be any good, if it was it wouldn't be on a ship. If you buy it because you like it then fair enough I suppose, it's only a con if you think you are buying something you ain't. It's not really an "auction'' either is it?

The pieces we have bought were not bought for an investment but for decoration and reminders of our cruise/trip. I have seen decorators snap up pieces for reselling, we have never bought for investment purposes and of the two piece one was a a Ted Williams collage, my husband is a collector of Ted Williams memorabilia and considering the price and it was framed was not out of line... my print and it was a print was to be my only souvenier of the trip...and when I saw it pre-auction I fell in love with it.... and was surprised that the item came up first and was so affordable.. We are not talking about pieces that are in the category of thousands of $$ as many were.. We have over the years through well informed auctioneers learned much about art know exactly what is being sold or offered... Are the pieces any good or worthwhile..it depends on your opinion. We have bought within our budget. Perhaps if you would attend an auction or go to a pre-auction and ask questions you might become better informed. You might be able to spot a real Tarkay opposed to somebody doing copies of his work. You might be a collector of sports memorabilia or learn about Erte. Art is in the eye of the beholder..so please don't tell me it can't be any good...that is not the point of these postings. P hil&Liz have given me a great site and this company is not all it's cracked up to be....

Contacted Celebrity again and found a great customer rep.. she called the art auction company and we had a three way conversation.... They definetely are third rate...no answers why the piece is not available and why they haven't mailed out the piece that is ready..Oh yes... we are one of several complaint they have had about this company....interesting...

Considering that the ship's photographer charges over $20 for a photo unframed, maybe a nice piece of art would be just as good a memento!

I have never understood why anybody would use a decorator and get the idea that somehow they were getting their decorations at a discount or wholesale. There is another field where it is "buyer beware"!

Default Art work

A woman bidding against me one cruise was the wife of a very famous basketball player from Boston and it was known that she was a decorator.. I've seen people spend more than $20,000.00 at one time The decorators can re-sell the pictures for much more $$. Since Parrot Pop is a Ted Williams fan the one piece, a collage, was affordable.. (never came up for auction) and the piece I bought was to be my souvenier of our trip to Israel..it was love at first sight when I saw it and touched me..As for using a "decorator", well, it maybe a status thing or for people who aren't sure on what goes together. Many furniture stores will provide a "decorating' service to help pull together a room.. I myself did it many years ago... and it didn't cost me a cent.. sometimes you need somebody elses input to work out your ideas.

Seems like it's time for Cruise Lines to get out of the Art Business.

It is another area for the cruise line to make $$$, yes they get their "cut" of the profits...the same as from the cosmetic, liquor and other retail shops on board

Thanks for thr update - always of interest to me. I dislike these art auctions, and RCL has wisely moved away - but it is always possible they could get scammed, too.

Paul...we never had a problem with Park West. The Ted Williams collage was bought before the auction. The print I spotted was one of Israel and when I saw it the piece moved me emotionally (remember we were on the Holyland Cruise) and considering the prices on some of their pieces this piece framed was a steal. I will tell you that we are now dealing with them directly and hope to have a resolution, even if it means waiting another month. Why they continue to sell/auction pieces when they do not have the stock is another question. There is no doubt that art auctions are a revenue producing for the cruise lines and on the whole the price are fair if you do homework on the net. I've always found the auctions to be a learning experience such as listening to the many lecturers they bring on board. Revenue whether from the shops or the spa are important to the cruise lines don't you agree and they will have to fill the space with something...i guess it's "let the buyer beware'.. The fact that Celebrity has received numerous complaints from passengers means they have a problem and will have to deal with some angry cruisers..
