When I say I go on cruises & generally have a balcony cabin some people say "I wouldn't want a balcony I'd be afraid I would JUMP off" has anyone else ever heard this? flippin' nonsense I think.
I have seen posts that have stated, when people look at the water, strange and scary thoughts come to their mind. maybe odd to us who don't feel this, but, troubling to those who do.....

the only thing that i have heard of is people who have never tried a balcony because they were afraid that either they or their kiddos would fall off the balcony, which is virtually impossible unless you climb onto a chair, and throw a leg over the railing
This is different, an urge to throw themselves over the side!! never occurred to me I must say. I have been on a cruise where someone "fell" over, but I don't see how that happened.
I love a balcony - but have never had an overwhelming desire to jump off.

My best friend, who otherwise is EXTREMELY normal, has that same feeling when he is looking off of anything high. A feeling like he wants to hurl himself off.
He has succumbed to this urge by bungee jumping. Afterward he said he'd never do that again because it scared the crap out of him.
I think there is an actual name for this but I can't remember it now.
Take care,
Mike(Who has no desire to jump)

thats weird, i know the water can be mesmorizing (sp?) i like to watch the water & waves from our balcony, and maybe catching some sealife froliking alongside the ship
As horrible as this sounds...it has happened. Lots of people (and I do mean that) have jumped. More crew than guests, but it does happen more than you'd think...or want to know.
I believe the uncontrollable desire to hurl one's self into the sea is called 'Rapture of the sea'. I googled around for an exact definition and found none. However my searching did find this is a very common feeling. Usually people dont give in to it, but quite a few were surprised themselves to feel the desire to jump.
Interestingly today, on this sort of topic.. I was asked if I thought people who commited suicide on ships, actually booked the ship to have an easy out, or if thoughts just like this activated these feelings, and they were acted upon....This woman is a long time cruisers of lengthy high end cruises.. I asked her if this had ever happened on any of her cruises...no she told me...
