Default Eating-How do you not gain weight

I have never been on a cruise but want to very soon. Almost everyone I have ever talked to who has been on a cruise(even a short one) has come back a fair amount heavier than when they departed. Any advice on not gaining too much weight on a cruise? what do you do?

Thanks

You do a lot of walking on a ship. I suggest taking the stairs everywhere you go instead of the elevator. That helps.

Yep, I do the same, use the stairs when ever possible, instead of waiting on elevators, especially going down, much quicker and burns calories.

Start the day with a good breakfast and try to eat light for lunch and very little snacking between lunch and dinner, then all out for dinner followed by a walk around deck before the after dinner show...Last cruise I think I ended up only one or two pounds extra and that can get burned off once you return to work and every day activities at home.

It's really not difficult. Eat sensibly, avoiding fatty foods, the choices are tremendous so I wind up eating far more fruits than I do at home. I don't avoid deserts, I just don't eat a ton of them. Some weight gain is expected with fluid retention from salt intake and not drinking the water in the quantities you would at home. Who wants to hunt up a bathroom every time you turn around?

I don't care if I gain weight on a cruise; I take it off when I get back home.
My motto…. Eat, drink be fat and drunk!
Life’s short don’t sweat it!

The best way is not to dwell on the possibility of gaining weight ,just have fun .

I think weight gain on a cruise may more likely related to alcohol consumption. Yes the food is everywhere but many tend to drink more on a cruise than at home and don't account for those additional calories.

As others mentioned be as active as possible. If you have lots of ports get out and explore on foot for a while.

I don't drink alcohol due to medical problems .The most I will have is perhaps a small glass of wine once a year .

Walk, walk, walk!

Also, I've found that what I gain is mostly in "water weight". My body isn't used to the salt in the ship's food. When I get home it "goes" away !

I have two extreme's I can tell you about. The first was a young lady who prided herself on the fact that she got up at 4 AM and exercised for two hours, ate a tiny breakfast, no lunch, and ordered just salad (dry) and fish for dinner. And told us all about it ! Then there was a man who ordered at least two of every course, then critized his wife for what she ordered. This is why we now LOVE Anytime Dining !

My point (and I do have one!) is to eat a "normal" amount and don't deny yourself things you love. I'm a "fluffy" person and I never gain more than four pounds on a cruise.

If you do not over fill your plate at any time and do walk as much as possible then you should be okay. There are many times when at the buffet or even at dinner in the main dining room that I will see something I want to try, so try it I do, just watch how much you put on the plate or if in the dining room how much you actually eat. I can not walk upstairs very good because of bad knees but we do walk down the stairs a lot and do walk around the decks. Also we try to walk a lot in port. If you like snorkeling then if you can do that inport that to will help, so manyplaces have great snorkeling and you can spend a long time in the water getting exercise.

The best way to not gain weight is not to eat so much Seriously, one of the best ways to control weight is controlled portions. This means avoiding the buffet-not totally, after all you are on holiday-but maybe every other day have breakfast and/or lunch in the dining room. We just did 14 nights which meant 42 meals-only 6 of those were in the buffet.

My increase is definitely attributed to alcohol consumption I'd say I gain about 4 - 5 lbs on a 12 day cruise. I try and lose a few before going and work on the rest when I get back. We take the stairs as much as possible and try and walk in ports.

WALK!!! I don't walk at home, why would I want to exercise and wear off those calories I so joyfully took in?

I agree 100% Donna.

I don't know why but I always lose weight on a cruise. I suspect it is because I snack less and sometimes skip 2 courses at dinner.

As everyone says it is all about balance.

Unhappy Weight Gain

Okay, so I like to eat/dine on a cruise, but I have found that those froo-froo mixed drinks help put on the weight and as I leave the ship my feet are very swollen from all the salt.. It takes a couple of weeks, more or less to loose the weight.

It is hard to gain weight on the ships like Oasis/Allure of the Seas. Yes there are lots of places to eat; but the ship is so large that you walk everywhere; you walk along the boardwalk; you walk thru central park; on deck five you walk completely arount the entire ship; on sports deck you ride the flowrider and zip line; these things burn calories; then u walk on shore excursions.

Sounds like walking is da winner. That and moderation in what you eat. I am not a big buffet kinda guy but those midnight buffets I hear so much about on some of the cruises sound so tempting:o

Eat what you want. You'll be doing a lot of walking. If you want the midnight buffet, enjoy.

I was wondering about that, too . I haven't seen one in years, but I haven't sailed every line. The Princess ship's usually have a chocolate buffet on the last sea day, but that's in the afternoon.

I just came back from a 25 night cruise where I gained just two pounds. I avoided bread and most desserts. At tea, I would avoid the sweets most days. For dinner, I focused on protein and vegetables. For lunch, I always had a steak sandwich and crab legs. Breakfast was eggs and fruit. My big downfall was alcohol. I drank around 1500 calories a day. Luckily, the treadmill in the gym helped as did the shore excursions.

Regarding midnight buffets on cruiselines: I spoke with Capt. Johnny on the Allure in Jan. He said Royal discontinued the midnight buffet, because it wasn't cost effective. He said the amount of hours the kitchen spent on getting it ready, and the amount of hours the pastry chefs spent on creating all the special cakes and the chefs cutting all the ice carvings etc, he said a lot of people would come into the dining room at midnight; and they would take a lot of pictures and leave. Capt. Johnny said too much of the food was not eaten; so Royal stopped the midnight buffet.

No more midnight buffet on Carnival. That stopped awhile ago.

We us the stair master ( use stairs instead of elevator)

Eat as we would at home and try not to over indulge on the desserts.
