Smile 3.4 day cruises

I was just reading a post where someone was asking about the NorwegianSky.And someone posted that ships used for 3 and 4 day cruises are never the top of the line ships. Is this true do they have specific ships for the 3 and 4 day cruises that are less fancy then ships that would be used for a 7 or 14 day cruise?

Hi Dh,
Yes, it is true, the newer fancier ships do at least 6-7 day cruises and the older smaller ones do the Nassau run...Just the way it is...

You mean Disney isn't top of the line??? I didn't know that. Never did Sky but have done Carnival, smaller ships by today's standards but they were top of the line at one time and have all the ammenities one can do on a short cruise.

No. They are average size. I don't see Epic, Oasis, Allore doing world cruises.

its all about the money. The vast majority of cruisers are looking for a 7 day get-away. The cruise lines are going to put the bigger, newer ships on those itinearies where they can make the most bang for the buck

Talking Ships

Indeed, the ships used on the 3/4 day cruises are seldom the biggest and newest ships. As noted above it is a cost/price analysis for the cruise lines. The 7 day cruises are the ones that are heavily promoted nationally. The 3/4 day cruises are sort of "niche" products primarily promoted as party cruises for the local market. Over the years, the quality of ships used in these cruises has varied. For a long time on the West Coast RCI used the old Viking Serenade, actually a converted ferryboat! We loved her.

The world cruises are another "niche" market, with few people able to devote that amount of time to cruising. They are frequently on the middle size, or even the smaller ships. HAL's Prinsendam at about 600 passengers does great world cruises.

So, honestly, if you want the biggest, newest ship with all the bells and whistles you are going to find her cruising the Caribbean or Alaska.

Have a GREAT cruise!

Heh, not quite fair bringing Disney into the picture. The guest service gold standard by which so much else is judged by. :-p

Yeah yeah, I work for 'em and I will toot their horn ... but I actually work front line guest services at the resorts, so I know how and what we do on a daily basis that I would never expect from another hotel type company anywhere.
