After your 5 hr layover, prepare yourself for the possibility of further delays.
We were there last week, and could not push pack, and had a wait, and then when we did , we had a 45 minute delay for traffic.Given my druthers, I will never fly through this airport again.

JFK is the preferred airport for those of us living in NYC and its vicinity .Its much preferable to LaGuardia ,Newark ,MacArthur and Westchester .Essentially JFK is the lesser of the 4 evils.
If you have access to the Admirals club it beats sitting elsewhere.
Newark is not so bad - you can take NJT or Amtrak and be in midtown in 30 minutes.

Last time we had a long layover at JFK, friends picked us up and we went into Manhattan for dinner. We have a great steakhouse in Tribeca (I believe) that we love to eat at when in New York. Five hours might be ok if you can get in the special security lines on your return to JFK.
