Default Do you care who the Cruise Director is?

Ummm, just what I asked! We don't, even though we enjoy reading John Heald's (Carnival) blog.

But I do like Ken Rush.

For the most part I never cared a wit, and, basically I still don't. Some have been bland, & others pretty good & some we hardly ever saw. Ken Rush, was just not my cuppa tea, though polished more then many.

I did see the difference with John Heald on the Magic., There is a good reason why he is the brand ambassador for Carnival.

Quick answer, NO. Now there are some that we did not care for and only a couple we liked. The one we like the best was Jorge but he has left Carnival and I think the business of CD. He was better than the comics on the ship and had a great personality.

I too like to read John's blog and his FB page. Would I like to cruise with him sure but I won't go out of the way to be sure he is the CD on a cruise.

Not really - I suppose I don't appreciate their management skills enough - but our cruise is not affected much by the CD's "up front" activities.

I really never paid much attention to who the CD was on my cruises until last Jan. on the Constellation. Sue Denning was really amazing-very involved with the passengers, doing her own Trivia session, also a scarf demo. She was literally everywhere, have no idea when (or if) she slept
That said, I would never pick a cruise based on who the CD was. Even if he or she was a real dud, I can manage to entertain myself quite well on a cruise ship! I've never sailed Carnival but I do read John Healds blog-he sounds like a real hoot

I had read so much about John Heald, that I was actually dreading having him on Carnival Dream, .... but I was pleasantly surprised. He is a great CD. Would I be pleased if I encountered him on another cruise, absolutely. Would I book a ship just because he is on the ship, NO.

I've been reading good things about Graham Seymour,...and look forward to having him on FOTS.

A good cruise director can make or break a cruise. I can't for the life of me remember who our CD was on Eurodam, though at the time, I had no complaints about him.

I hated our CDs on GOTS. It was a husband and wife team, and I found them to be boring and lacklustre.

Post Cruise Director

IMAO all cruise directors are pretty much stamped out of the same mold. Seen one, seen them all.

The only one whose name I even remember was Jimmy, the CD on our last cruise on HAL. He really did make a difference in the trip. Maybe that is just because he appeared regularly at the things we like, the Culinary Center and Trivia. Basketball tossers may never have seen him.

Not really, though we really looked forward to seeing Richard Spacey. Other than him, I don't really care too much about who we get.

We had John on the Magic and liked him, but were kind of unsure what the fuss was all about. He is good at what he does, but some of it is over the top for me. I do enjoy his blog, but I would never book a cruise based on the cruise director.

Dont care would not know the diffrence anyway. We have only been on one cruise . What do they do? We found plenty of stuff to keep us busy just sitting around looking at the ocean having something to eat walking around the ship.Plenty to keep us busy. I wonder if the more cruises you take the more you would need a CD to fill in your time?

Can I ask what a CD is meant to do? Don't flame me - just asking.

I hear a voice but that is the limit of the interaction.

It would not matter to me if there was no CD on board.

Apart from their actual job of organising the entertainments a good one acts as a sort of host cum cheerleader at events, like sailaway parties & can improve the atmosphere.

What a good cruise director does behind the scenes is the most important thing to me. Make sure the events and activities are varied and go off at the right time. If they do that and their staff have a positive attitude then I'm happy.

I no longer attend the "disembarkation talk" because they are the same but also because if one more CD tells the story of "Last week on the ship a gentleman put all his clothes in his luggage and set the luggage outside his cabin. The next morning he had to leave the ship in his bathrobe." If I hear that one more time I won't be responsible for my actions.

Take care,
Mike

I don't care who the CD is but I found John Heald to be much funnier than the comedians on the Splendor.

Thanks Mike and John.

I've not missed anything. On the Az Journey, CD, by Mike's standards, was good. Entertainment was seamless and varied.

I have never attended a disembarkation talk but even I've heard the bathrobe story.

We had a fantastic CD . We plaqnned to go on a shore excursion and discussed this with the CD . This person being aware of my physical limitations suggested that we not attempt to do the trip .She instead came up with an alterntative suggestion which worked out great .

Henry, that's so great! That should be part of the CD's job, but it's not always. You were very lucky to find such a good CD.

I've never booked a cruise on which I knew who the CD would be; they do change regularly, and normally I'm not on the same ship twice in a row. I had a cruise director on the Eurodam last summer who was fantastic --- his name was Jason, and he was everywhere, very friendly, and I think the whole cruise reflected his great attitude. The CD on last week's Bermuda cruise had just been promoted from another job and was invisible except for introducing the shows. She didn't even do that well.

In april of 2010 we cruised on the Oasis OTS and the cruise director was Ken Rush. In january of 2011 we cruised on the Allure OTS and once again Ken was the CD on that ship. When he saw us on the second day of our Allure cruise We ran into him, he looked at us and said I saw you on the Oasis last year.
Now as CD on the two Biggest ships in the world you have to have a great memory as well as be a people person to remember a couple of cruisers.

Well, "Henry", differences of opinion do make life interesting, don't they?

I suspect we saw the same things from different perspectives; what you saw as constantly being "available" I would explain by saying that was because she was never actually "doing" anything. And perhaps you don't like the pre-showtime patter or activities that have existed on every other cruise I've taken, but were noticibly missing this time.

CJ Rogers was our CD .I personally polled numerous people who were on the cruise and all agreed with my BDW and I re CJ . She has a great sense of humor ,a very nice singing voice ,a genuine smile and was constantly with passengers .Perhaps we differ in what we perceive the duties of a CD to be .

Good obs Mike,
I agree on your first two points but of the 2,000+ people onboard, at last 1,000 would not have heard the joke and might like it you know. ( I do feel as you do but want to eat on cruise ships not in a Federal eating place).
Surprised you did not mention how your cabin gets cleaned every time you leave your cabin , how do they know that or how about ' Are we all enjoying ourselves or this is a special deal at xx store , just say Honeysweet sent you ' same dialogue at each port.

On, I really do not care who they are , just be a good organiser and treat your staff well as the Captain depends on you. I would like to see them as the public face chat with people on deck in the various areas, not walk around looking like a self appointed master of the ship.

I usually have a bit of interaction with the cruise director, so YES, it does make a difference to me. Can I have a good time with a "lack luster" cruise director? Yes, as proven by my last "Miracle" cruise, with the infamous "Malcolm Burn" as cruise director, where nothing went off as advertised in the "Fun Times", and there were so many "inside jokes" among the entertainment staff. We still had a good time, but not nearly as much fun as when the CD is a "good-un". Give me "Big Sexy", or just about any of the other Carnival or RCI cruise directors, and I'll have a GREAT time, instead of just a "good time".
