Eastland Maritime Disaster /1915

I watched a segment on tv today about this disaster of a ship, tied to the dock in Chicago, and I had never heard of this maritime disaster before, have you? Quite tragic. 844 souls lost. The Titanic was just 3 years prior.

What a tragity, never heard this story...Hard to believe that could even happen, surly not today. I know just standing back from Allure, makes you wonder how a ship that tall can't tip, but it hardly moves from side to side. Unless you are up on the pool deck looking at the horizon, you can notice it, but so very slight, again, you can't truly feel it.

Yes, there is a large memorial plaque historical marker in Chicago next to the place on the Chicago River where the ship overturned.

As a side note, have you ever heard about the Oprah Winfrey studios being haunted? That story comes from the Eastland tragedy. Before the current Oprah Winfrey studios was turned into a TV studio, it was an armory for the Illinois National Guard. After the Eastland tragedy, many of the bodies were stored in the Armory because they ran out of room at the Cook County ME office. It was said that the souls of the Eastland dead roamed the halls of the old Armory, and later when the building was turned into the TV studios that housed the Oprah Winfrey show many stories were told by staffers of the studio being haunted. Oprah herself always refused to address the issue in interviews.

My son did his 3rd grade history fair project on the Eastland.
