We're headed to Cozumel and Grand Cayman next week. I've heard a little bit about certain places wanting you to use biodegradable sunscreen. Where do they do this and is it mandatory? I guess I can understand why and all. But where do you buy bio. sunscreen?
Never heard of it but I do get a bit cross at people who use the "oil" when they are using a pool, bad enough in the sea but in a pool it really messes it up.

I'm sure it must be around at some stores, prob surfing/swimsuit specialty stores but since you will be in Cozumel, I do know for sure that the little shop at Wet Wendy's has a large selection of this stuff. We were there last week and noticed the display.
Some taxi drivers deny knowing this place so if you want to go take the address with you. Its just down the road from the big square/clock/shoppping area so its easy to find and close to lots of shopping, so just make your way to the square then look for the street name/address.

All reputable medical authorities recommend using sunscreen whenever you will be exposed to the sun. That definitely includes being in a pool. Sorry if you feel it makes a mess but it is the proper thing to do for self protection.
The biodegradbable sunscreen is a big push in Mexico for protecting the reefs and just plain keeping the water clean. I am surprised the cruise ships have not gotten on board with this trend as they all want to appear to be eco-friendly.

Where did I say don't use sunscreen? I did say using the OIL makes a mess, you don't need to use OIL, that is the stuff people use to get a better tan. Sunscreen can be the biodegradable stuff the post was about.
While we are on the health aspects I don't know why people plaster themselves in factor 50+ something then lie in the sun just getting hot & sweaty without getting a suntan. Why bother?

Check the Environmental Working Group's guide to sunblock. I am a big fan of natural sunblocks...Caribban Solutions and MexiTan are both very inexpensive (compared to other natural sunblocks) and both are biodegradable. I put Earth's Best Mineral Sunblock on my strawberry blond, fair-complected two-year-old son and he's never had a sunburn (not even close) and we spend a LOT of time in the sun--in pools, at parks and playgrounds, etc. It works beautifully. Good luck!
