Default Cruise question :

When you are in the MDR on a cruise do you tend to order one food item from each section or do you loke to sample many ?

I have a friend who likes to taste everything on the menu . I am more of a conservative diner and tend not to order more than one food item .

I order one item from each category, and if a choice appeals to me, will possibly order a second.

I am also conservative and don't need to taste everything.

I just order what I like.

Let's face it, specifically to the appetizer selections, you could order two, and they would still not equal the size of a shore side order. I don't think it's out of line at all, and certainly the waiter is used to this, and wouldn't look askance, nor would any tablemate .

Talking One or More?

I generally order only one entree, but on occasion, if I'm ordering fish, and the pasta looks inviting, I'll order one pasta entree to be shared with my wife.

Now, if they have escargot as an appetizer, I'll order two. Yum!

I just order one of each usually, unless there is something in that catagory that I don't care for. Also, want to save room for dessert for sure!

Not at all the done thing on UK ships, but we dined with a young officer one night who asked for two steaks, & another time someone asked for the vegetarian option as a veg selection...deep fried tempura battered veg, we now do this whenever it on the menu. I did notice on Celebrity the server would ask if we enjoyed something & when we said we did would ask if we wanted another.

In my early days I would often order a second appetizer or entree. That lasted about three or four cruises.

Since then I rarely order more than one entree but often will have an additional appetizer. i.e. salad and hot appetizer.

If there is a pasta entree my wife and I may order one of those and share it along with our own entrees.

I have never been given a second glance when ordering a second of anything.

Take care,
Mike

Depends on my mood... sometimes just one each, sometimes both soup and salad, sometimes 2 entrees, sometimes the wife and I will split a 3rd selection to try it. Sometimes the whole table will sample a selection of all desserts. In an odd way it adds to the festive mood of the table. Other couples (who never before realized it was an option) will often begin to order and sample extras as well and the waiters never have a problem, and even seem to encourage it. I like to think we usually have a fun table, and the waiters join right in (and are tipped accordingly). We do it with a fun vacation spirit, trying new things, not just gluttony. IMHO, ordering 4 lobsters or multiple steaks is just pigging out...

Talking Ordering

I like to browse through the entire menu. But I certainly can't order EVERYTHING or even something from each category every night. I either order what I like, or what looks interesting.

Some nights this is easy, appetizer, soup, salad, entree, dessert.

Other nights it might be two appetizers and no soup, or so on.

On some occasions I have been known to order three appetizers, soup, salad and no entree!

It is very common for Renée and I to order a side plate of pasta to split, and on HAL we always order the Bami Goreng to split when it is on the menu. Often we will both order dessert and then split the cheese plate. Or order dessert plus the ice cream or sherbert.

It used to be on lobster night that I just asked for extras and they always showed up. My record was four lobster tails on Princess to Alaska one night! But these days they are getting much more stingy about the lobster. Some lines are doing Surf N Turf with a very small lobster tail. In that case Renée and I each order it, she gets both filets and I get both lobsters.

And caviar is almost never on the MDR menu any more.

It wasn't all that long ago that cruise dining room menus were broken into
Appetizer
Salad
Soup
Pasta
Entrees
Dessert
categories.

Then, I would order one, or less, of each category.

Now they combine all appetizers, salads and pastas into one category, and then have entrees seperate. This, no doubt, to discourage the courses one orders.

For me, it depends on what looks good. My first cruise I was a bit apprehensive and didn't order more than one item, but then I learned that item may never pop back up on the menu. Now, if something appeals to me I order it, just in case so that I won't miss something that I might really like.

Only for the first night of my first cruise was I apprehensive. Of course I was travelling with a bunch of WTH cruise travel agents, so I should have just followed their lead. Subsequent nights I did. I joked that our waiter needed to bring a legal sized notepad to take orders for our table.

Now I just order what feels right. If I see 2 entrees that interest me, I will order both. I figure while I'm still young and have a fairly healthy metabolism, may as well enjoy it right?
