Default 20/20 hatchet job

I don't know how many saw it, but last night ABC's 20/20 did a real hatchet job on the cruise industry. They, of course, started off with a review of the Costa Concordia debacle, but then went on to other things, apparently calculated to keep people from booking a cruise.

To hear them tell it:
  • Massive fights and drunken brawls are a frequent occurrence.
  • drunks staggering around, passing out and throwing up in the corridors is a normal event.
  • Getting drunk and falling overboard with no one from the cruise line bothering to even slow down is par for the course. (they cited 22 instances of this in ten years but failed to note that some 150 million people had cruised in that time period.)
  • The crews do nothing but party and have sex 24/7/365.
My wife and I have been on, I think, 16 cruises now -- several of a month's duration or more, and have never observed anything of the sort. Of course we have never been on a "twenty-something" Carnival cruise (which 20/20 seemed to feature for each category of malfeasance.)

They also showed episodes of extremely violent weather (pianos and furniture crashing into passengers etc.) as if it were a regular occurrence.

To me, the whole thing appeared to be hitting the industry below the belt while it was down from the Concordia disaster.

If I were considering cruising and had no experience, and saw this, I would promptly book a safari or something far from the sea. Very unfair!!

This has been fouled up by ABC since day 1. Diane Sawyer has said repeatedly " the Carnival ship" in her broadcasts, @skimm (the reporters twitter page) used "Carnival ship" in her headlines.

There have been many posts on FB, twitter, and on the ABC /ABC 20/20 sites about the obvious slant given by the Disney network.

Micky Arison was tweeted the first time DS made the editorializing comments, the ABD twitter page and @skimm was told of their editorializing, and JH FB page has had comments. JH has said that he would notify Carnivals PR team about it.

Over the years,we know things have happened onboard, that have created headlines. Ships also have been through fires, engine loss, bad weather, and, have limped back to port, with unhappy passengers.

Many times things happen onboard, that you would never know about, unless you sat with somebody somewhere, who had a piece of gossip, to share. The segment they showed last night, strung all the bad things that have happened over many years, to give an uneducated, possible cruiser, a picture of, this happens on every cruise, every night!
We all know this is just not the case, and, shame on them for doing so.

If someone showed videos of a family get together's over the holidays, and showed the fights, the crying kids, Uncle Fester punching Uncle Frankie..Aunt Sadie, drinking too much ripple, and, falling down drunk at Christmas, & edited all these years of video together, we would all yell, never again..but we know every dinner is not that way

The Concordia tragedy was the imptetus of the media to shine a light on the industry in a way to just sensationalize it,and, for the ratings.Sad.......

People will believe this. Makes you wonder what else ABC likes to fudge about.

I was going to watch but was unable and forgot to hit the DVR. I'll have to see if it is available online.

A great time to sensationalize cruising with the viewing public. It's said that they can show all the bad stuff and because it did happen they can't be hit with a libel suit. However, only showing the very infrequent drunks, rowdy party people and other negatives is yellow journalism at its best.

Take care,
Mike

Network TV is more fo the BS!

I never watch 20/20 and I'm glad that I did not see that anti-cruise propaganda.

I just watched it online and my take on it is that it will influence people who haven't taken cruise to find another type of vacation. I don't think it will change the opinion of anyone who has cruised and enjoyed it.

They definitely focused on the negative. They did say that the incidents were rare but it was quickly passed over.

Not a great piece of investigative journalism. More sensationalism than journalism.

Take care,
Mike

My mother in-law had asked me just recently to find her a deal on a cruise for her and my father in-law plus 2 friends. We sent them on a 3 day for their first cruise a couple years ago, and they were undecided on if they would go again. I was SO excited that they were ready to try another, and after all this bad media she called me and said nevermind.

I guess if you are the type to buy into it, and don't have a strong opinion already this would be the case! I sent her some better info from a couple articles here on CM, but I am not likely to change her mind. I am working on it though!!

SO sad how this could affect the cruise industry! Makes me want to book another cruise just to help out!

Now that would be a nice thing to do for you and for the cruising industry.

Exactly Mike! I'm sure an hour long piece on the true joys of cruising would not be "titillating" enough. But I'm sure there would be many people who would enjoy it, including some who have never cruised before. it's a terrible shame that the overall impression of many will now be what they saw on 20/20 rather than the truth.

I thought it as basically a Carnival bashing show, just didn't point out any positives at all. Yes, they really need to follow up with a more uplifting show on cruising...just saying...

I dont understand what diffrence it makes what 20/20 says about cruising! It wont change anything about the cruise industry.I dont think the cruises will change in any way. I guess it would be nice if it was a more objective report but what are you going to do?

We booked our first cruise AFTER the Costa disaster.

I thought the 20/20 report was ludicrous.

You get in a car, you take a chance

You fly in a plane, you take a chance

You cruise on a ship in the ocean, you take a chance

Things happen, MOST of the time they don't. Also, this close to the Concorida wreck I would think everyone is so on alert and safety conscious, it may be one of the SAFEST times to cruise.
