Question What ports do passport checks?

When our ship stopped in Kusadassi Turkish border agents reviewed and stamped our passports. Likewise when making our next stop in Greece, or passports were again processed. Few (if any) Caribbean ports go through this process for passengers in transit. This makes me wonder what other ports require this? I understand St. Petersburgh is one, though we have not cruised there. Where else?

Technically your passport is checked in every new country the ship ports in. The passenger manifest with passport numbers and/or documentation information is verified by the country's Immigration department and port authorities.

Other countries may require that you have your passport with you when you leave the ship.

When we ported in Beijing (actually Xingang) people did not need their actual passport but those that didn't have it encountered some problems checking into hotels.

The cruise line will let you know if your passport is required. Some cruise lines will collect the passports and dispense them prior to docking.

Take care,
Mike

Unhappy St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg always does tough passport checks. It can take up to three hours for the whole ship to be cleared.

This is complicated by the fact that independent tour companies always urge their passengers to rush off the ship, which leads to a big conflict with ship's tours also trying to get off the ship quickly.

I think the Turkey/Greece thing was probably related to either a) historic relations between the two countries not being so good, and/or b) leaving the European travel zone. Option b may have effected travel to Dubrovnik back in the day, we didn't encounter a physical passport check going into Split either.

Croatia and Turkey are not in the Schengen zone so when moving between countries that are in and out of the zone your passport needs to be checked again as they look at it as entering the Schengen Zone for the first time. We've found that ships collect your passports a few days before hitting Turkey and then return them once you've passed back into a Schengen zone country.
