Default What would encourage you to purchase a cruise?

We're always seeing cruise lines offering specials for a 'limited time only' that include a 'free upgrade', reduced fare, or onboard credit as a way of encouraging sales.

We know that most of the time the 'free upgrade' is simply an upgrade from one category of inside cabin to a different category of inside cabin (or oceanview to oceanview, or balcony to balcony), but sometimes it can be an upgrade from an inside to oceanview or oceanview to balcony.

Keep in mind that it really doesn't cost them any money to offer 'free upgrades' because they're getting you to spend the same amount. But does this really encourage an increase in sales or do you think more people would be encouraged to buy a cruise if they were offered a reduced rate? Then again, forget the free upgrade and the reduced fare, how about if they offered onboard credit? With free onboard credit of course, the fare remains the same.

So, if the dollar value was exactly the same between the three, the question is which limited special do you think has a greater impact on stimulating sales; getting a 'free upgrade', reducing the fare, or getting onboard credit?

Reducing the fare is the first thing that I would look at. I have no brand loyalty, so price and port are my number one and two considerations. Next would be the on board credit. I like to pick out my actual cabin, so upgrades don't really thrill me.

For me, I would also be excited if there were other things like dropping or greatly reducing the charge for a third or fourth person in the cabin and most importantly, the single supplement charges. As a single, I would like to travel without paying for myself as if I were two people.

Price first and foremost....2nd would be an onboard credit....lastly, would be an upgrade. Unless I know it's a major bump, I would not be interested. I book a cabin becuse I want that cabin.

I hear that!!!

I get a large number of complaints from my clients about how much it costs for the 3rd & 4th in a cabin. But the biggest complaint I get has to do with the single supplement. EVERYONE feels this is a rip off. While they understand the cruise line can make twice as much money selling a cabin to two people instead of just one, they find it extremely difficult to understand the reasoning behind not offering a more reasonable fare for singles when it's very obvious there are alot of cabins that will otherwise go unsold.

I've always been of the mindset that it's better to make some money by selling it at half price for a single than by not selling to a couple for full price.

But then again that makes sense to me.

For me, a special shore event would be the best special. Get me great seats for the Edinburgh Tattoo or seats for Grand Prix of Monaco or tickets to British Open. Tickets to a private concert at Catherine's Palace in St Petersburg being able to take all the pictures of the Amber Room was great (I know everyone can do this).

A cabin upgrade or shipboard credit doesn't do anything for me; I want to feel special.

Price then onboard credit......The free upgrade does nothing for me as I like to pick my room!

What discourages us from picking a cruise is getting phone calls from cruise sellers that have been generated by viewing cruise websites. That alone hurts the sale of a cruise.
We prefer to explore and discover what is available on our own. But that comes from over 30 years of travel experience. And so much for an unlisted number.

I have to agree, an offer of an upgrade doesn't interest me much, unless I book a guarantee cabin category. I have booked that way a few times, and never got bumped up, so if the price is a fair price, I would much rather book a specific cabin and possibly receive an onboard credit, that works best for me.

That's why when visiting these websites, you never want to leave any personal information because it's an invitation for them to contact you. It's fine to look, but don't leave any footprints. And if it's a website that requires you to sign up before looking, then go elsewhere because there are always other sites that will provide the same information. Or, better yet, talk to your agent and let them do all the work for you.

I find it funny that people complain about the 3rd & 4th person pricing. I believe and I will go back and look but it comes out to about $400.00 or so less than the 1st & 2nd cruisers price. We always just divide the cost among the three of us so we all pay the same anyway. The 3rd & 4th person are enjoying all the same things on the ship so in my opinion it seems ok to me. I'm thinking maybe it depends on the line your sailing on, some are higher?
I agree as far as the single person if the ship is not sold out

I like the reduced price first than OBC, cabin upgrade never happens in GS or OS.

Actually, The phone calls come from the same cruise line, which happens to be one we have traveled many times. They have our info already. I never provide more than is needed. The calls come from more than one cruise sales planner. Several years ago we were a bit harassed by one and after trying to get to the right contact person I finally found someone that put us on a no call list. That helped then.
But I think it might be starting again. We do like the cruise line and don't need a hard sell.
I want to be able to look at their website and explore options without generating a call.
But you spoke of what encourages us to buy a cruise.
We look for A new itinerary, the ship and then the cost is considered.

That's why it's always best to book with an agent - you get the same pricing, sometimes less, plus you don't have to get all those phone calls from the cruise lines. And then you also only have to call one person for all the cruise lines instead of calling each cruise line individually.

But if you do get the calls, do like you mentioned; let them know to put in your file that they are not to call you. If they do, don't talk to the person calling - ask to speak to a supervisor and tell them to put you on the do not call list. The person calling is simply a seller and really has no power or authority other than to try and sell you something.

If you book through an agent, each cruise line has strict policies that they are not to call you. If they ever do, then a quick phone call to your agent will get that taken care of very quickly.

I tell my clients that when they are putting personal information in the system to use my email address and phone number to insure they don't get pestered by the cruise lines, and to only put their mailing address instead of mine if they don't mind getting advertisements in the mail. Everyone gets enough spam and this is just one way to help control what you get from the cruise lines.

This is where passengers and travel agents get it wrong. Your statement above (bolded by me) is completely wrong in many cases. Carnival Corp brands - which constitute about 50% of the entire industry - have an internal policy that ALL staterooms must be sold before a ship sails. On nearly all sailings, that is exactly what happens. They do not have to beg single travelers to buy staterooms when couples are willing to buy them.

Cruise Lines do not make any money selling cruises anymore. We only make money selling things to passengers onboard.
In our eyes, it would usually be more profitable to give a cabin free to a couple, than to sell the same cabin for half price to a solo traveler.

1,441 cruises and counting...............

It was my understanding Bruce that the passenger fare basically cover the costs of operating the ship then the profit is made as people spend money onboard.......is this still true?
