Question Urban Myth or Fact

I hear mixed stories about this , If you hear an announcement over the pa "Bright Star " it means serious medical emergency and "Rising Star"means a pax has passed or is this just a myth?

I have never heard either of those announcements, or if they were aired, just missed it. Now, it has me wondering??

I've been on several ships that had medical emergencies...maybe it's because Celebrity has an older crowd lol. Once a guy died a few hours after sailing apparently he had a heart attack and was 80ish although I didn't hear about it until dinner.

I've heard a 'bright star', but never heard of a 'rising star' announcement.

I do get my goat panels in a small Texas town named Rising Star. That's the only rising star I have ever heard.

Bright star yes, like I said I didn't hear about the death til later but it doesn't mean it wasn't called maybe I was on deck. They have fire teams and security people and everyone has a code that calls them to action. They don't announce fire on deck 7 room 712 to avoid freak outs.

The only announcements I recall hearing are more like "Code Bravo" or "Alpha" - guess I'm not much help here.

I did find this unofficial list online with a Google:
  • Bravo Bravo Bravo [port/starboard] man overboard on port or starboard side
  • Bright Star death or medical emergency
  • Code Adam missing child (named after Adam Walsh)
  • Cold Alpha or Alpha Team medical emergency or fire
  • Code Baby Ruth feces in the pool
  • Code Bravo fire
  • Code Delta damage to the ship or disaster or multiple injuries
  • Code Orange early stages of norovirus infection on a ship (Holland America) buffet is no longer self-serve but pools and other areas remain open
  • Code Oscar man overboard
  • Code Papa pollution (oil spill, etc)
  • Code Red the dreaded norovirus
  • Code Sierra medical emergency needing a stretcher
  • Code Winnie feces in the pool (Disney)
  • Fallen Star death
  • Priority 1 fire (Cunard)
  • Priority 2 leak (Cunard)

That's interesting. I have never heard it called either, but like so many I am too busy having fun to pay attention. I guess I should start listening more carefully though so I will know what is going on with my surroundings.

In 2006, on the Statendam, one morning there was a code Bright Star for a cabin two or three doors down from us. Unfortunately the occupant, a very elderly gentleman, passed away in his sleep.

I've heard Bright Star on a couple of other voyages. On one on board Princess it was for a heart attack and the woman made it off the ship and to the hospital. On the second one, I have no idea what happened.

Take care,
Mike

The only two that I've heard is Alpha and Bravo. The others I have never heard and I try to listen to all of the announcements that come across the loud speaker. I'm sure I've missed a few.
