Here's Why It's Always Best to Book With An Agent & Get Travel Insurance!!
While I don't appreciate the tone of the story because they're trying to make the cruise line look like it's their fault, it does give a good example as to why you should always book your cruise and why you should always purchase travel insurance.

But I couldn't help but thinking while watching this video, while they're condemning the cruise line for a lack of action, I can only imagine kind of help they would have received had they been on a plane, train, or at a resort!!

The help and protection are only as good as the TA and insurance you select. We have had ONE good TA and three bad ones. The good one left the business. :( August 28th, 2013 01:28 PM

Absolutely agree with that statement! It's like any other profession from doctors, lawyers, accountants, or mechanics - there are always a few great ones and a few terrible ones with a bunch of those who are just average.

As for the travel insurance, the same thing applies. We once had contracts with 5 vendors and fired 3 of them because their customer service was terrible. Two of those were among the biggest names in the business. So name and price are not the only thing to consider when purchase travel insurance. But the least desirable insurance are those provided by the cruise lines. It's almost always better to get independent insurance as they cover more and cost less, plus they provide cash reimbursement in all cases and not cruise credit as some of the insurance provided by the cruise lines offer.

But the most important advice about travel insurance is to make sure that, in fact, it is travel insurance and not travel protection. There is a big difference and it can end up costing you alot in the end.

Surprising that such well traveled people, ripped by a TA, would not have purchased independent insurance. August 28th, 2013 10:34 PM

I didn't catch their ages, but based on what they look like and the problems he had, I can only assume they were seniors, just not sure what age.

While it's always cheaper for the average cruiser to purchase independent travel insurance, often times it's cheaper for seniors to purchase the insurance offered by the cruise line.

The reason for this is the cruise line insurance is the same price for everyone based on the length of the cruise, so the price is averaged out. Whereas independent insurance is based on a person's age and amount to be covered, so the price is individualized.

Keep in mind that the amounts covered under the policies differ. Usually the cruise lines' policies are much less than independent, but some will not cover independent airfare.

So it's not unusual for seniors, especially those over 80, to go with best price instead of best coverage.

It's definitely one of those areas where the agent needs to discuss all the options and options with the client so the client can make an informed decision on what's best for them. And this is most obviously one of those issues where an agent should never recommend a course of action and let the client make the decision.

I have copied and pasted info previously posted by you and other posters regarding how to choose insurance. I now have sufficient information regarding insurance before booking my next cruise - thanks to people like you. August 29th, 2013 01:54 PM

Awesome! It's always good to do your homework before making a decision that you feel comfortable with. Often people will use a website like and they just look at the prices. Keep in mind that best price is not always best deal. And since each person is different and their needs are different, what is good for one may not be good for another.
