Exclamation Lock me out!

This story happened in a hotel though I would imagine it would apply to a cruise ship.

I am currently staying in a national brand business hotel. This morning I went down to the hotel gym. After I exercised I got distracted returning to my room and got off the elevator on the wrong floor. I then walked to "my" room, X03, slipped in my card key and saw the little light go green. I realized my mistake as I reached for the door handle and slunk away. Fortunately I did not come barging in on some random stranger!

I don't understand the technology behind hotel door locks but there are obviously not enough distinct encodings. Anyway the lesson is to always throw that deadbolt in your room or cabin. Otherwise you never know who may drop in uninvited.

Bob, I know how you feel. I had a a similar experience on a cruise ship. I was on the wrong floor, I put the room card in the slot the light turned green, I opened the door and I realized that I was in the wrong cabin. A couple was in the veranda and they did not notice me and I quickly exited.
Now I am very careful to make sure that I am in the right place

I also once got off the elevator on the wrong deck -- hey, if the door opens, I get out -- and my card opened someone else's cabin door. I started to go in, noticed that the bed cover was a different color, and backed up to look at the cabin number, then got out of there quickly.

Wow, had no idea the keys would open more than one door....I usually don't use the deadbolt, but now I should consider it...YIKES

Whether you are staying in a hotel room or a cabin on a ship, you should use the deadbolt.

Well, I am just dumbfounded by this information! I thought the hotels had learned their lesson long ago after being sued by guests who were assaulted in their rooms. They were not changing the codes, and key cards from a month ago would still open the rooms. I have a collection of them I have forgotten to turn in when checking out. But I thought EVERY hotel room now had a unique code for that stay only! Of course glitches can happen.

And I just assumed the same was true for cruise ships. We usually always dead lock our cabin anyway, but will for sure at all times now.

Most hotels have a software program that will not allow a desk clerk to program a key if the room is already occupied. However there can be glitches. In travel for a living and have walked in on some, let's just say uncomfortable scenarios.

Remember that no system is 100% foolproof.

So use the deadbolt and keep doors locked.
