Default Dubai

I know RCI had/has a cruise that embarked from Dubai, and, I'm wondering if anybody has cruised from there. I am fascinated with that port, having watched another interesting show about it today....just wondering if anybody can share their experience.

Haven't been yet but we're seriously considering Azamara's 2016 itinerary of Rome to Dubai. Would love to see both Petra and Dubai.

Linda, not yet. We sail from Dubai in November with stops at two other Emirates following. We are spending one night on one of the "palm" island chains before we sail. Will report back when we return.

One of my cruises ended in Dubai last year. I thought RCI dropped Dubai as there is little of interest in the area and I do understand their thinking. Much of the city is geared towards the ex-pat community.

The architecture is interesting - they tried to make part of the skyline look like New York but failed IMO. They just copy bits - like their cheaper version of the Bellagio fountains.

The city is much larger than I expected. Food - anything you want. The locals - are there many??

We did have an excellent driver/guide who made a huge difference. A good half day trip and to quote him you have seen Dubai.

The Souks are amazing. There are some local historic sights but I thought much of Dubai reminded me of a mixture of Las Vegas, Disney and lots of shopping malls with one drawback - no Grand Canyon.

I wanted to see Dubai and now that I have done it - I don't intend to return.

Hi Annie, how nice to see you.....I think 2 days would suffice for me to see what I have looked at with interest on TV. I know coming from Boston, that has a bit of age, having everything brand spanking new would be a shock..lol

Most of the country is ex pats, and, people who remained after the building boon, I heard, and it does appear the homes, on the palms island,, look like Florida transplants.

With that said, in my imaginary two days, my head would be on swivel! Lol.

A good friend of mine spent a week there in May. He is a V.P. for an avionics company and was meeting Emirates airlines. He had a lot of down time and explored the city. He is VERY well traveled and enjoys getting out experiencing a city or country. His take on Dubai was: It's the most boring city I've ever been to. He thought of it as "sterile", "giant Mall of America" and more "ex-pats" than locals.

Trip: I think you would love the shopping. There is plenty of it, but don't look for "bargains" in the city. It's an expensive city. More so than New York or London.

If Dubai was a stop on cruise I would love to see it for myself and make my own judgement.

Take care,
Mike

Mike, it's a shopping Mecca for sure, with specialty trips ther for that reason...in a place with really no history, with more ex pats then locals, you really miss the flavor of the way it was...since I love architecture, that's what lures me.
