New Orleans Update
The Louisiana Bond Commission voted to give the Port of New Orleans a $3.3 million line of credit to develop a new cruise terminal in the city's Bywater neighborhood. The financing includes $500,000 to complete a study, $300,000 in engineering costs and $2.5 million in construction costs. Four cruise ships currently call New Orleans their home port, the cruise industry generates about $97 million in direct spending in the city, and cruise passengers spend $19 million on New Orleans hotel stays. Louisiana's Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu, who heads the state's tourism office, said expanding New Orleans' cruise handling capacity is a top economic priority.
