Just go my documents from HAL and was surprised that phone calls from the Amsterdam are $15.00 a minute!! Can anyone tell me if cell phones work? How about long distance calling cards? Thanks in advance.
That's even if your phone will work. You need cell towers in order to make those calls. If you are close enough to land, your call may go through, but you will be charged the "roaming charges" for the island/port you are dialing from.
Cellphone do not work unless you are close enough to shore, (port), that you can get reception from the relay towers. Even then, in many places they do not work. Now there is a cell phone available that works via satellite but those are very expensive. My suggestion is that you make your calls when necessary from the payphones in port. You may also wish to use e-mail if you can as that is actually the cheapest way to keep in touch. I have a close friend that works onboard ships and that is how she keeps in touch, even before they had the e-mail onboard she used to check at the internet places that are in just about all ports.
