Default Price of Our Booking Dropped? Can we do Anything?

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me here. On 4/18 we booked passage on The Grand Princess for the Oct. 20, 2002- 7 Day Caribbean through our travel agency's on-line service. We've been confirmed, cabin assigned and deposit paid. It seemed like such a good deal we wanted to book it as soon as we found it.

In doing a little research on other travel sites, we've found cabins in the same catagory that we booked - Cat BB for $160.00 less. We even saw a Cat BA for slightly less than what we are paying. What can I do, if anything, to get the price dropped to the lower rate I've found?

The lower rates were through other travel sites. Can the agent I am dealing with now for this booking get the price dropped for me? How does that work? I tried to call over the weekend but the earliest I can contact her is Monday.

I know it may not seem like a huge difference but that could be the price of one round trip airfare! I'm happy with the cabin we selected, but if we could get the rate lowered it would just be icing on the cake.

Also- someone mentioned to me in email that Princess is doing some sort of promotion and that by filling out some forms on their web site we would get $100 dollars in shipboard credit? I did this but didn't see anything mentioned there about that. Would my agent be able to help me with that too?

I'm still a newbie novice learning the ins and outs here and would appreciate any help or advice you can give me.

We're booking our own airfare. On my confirmation we are being charged $10.00 each for "pre/post" packages. Does this mean transportation to and from the airport? It seems to be a mandatory charge. It's confusing. Does Princess offer transportation even if you don't book your airfare through them?

To be correct here. You don't really know if the price of your cruise dropped, it's just you have found other travel agents who are offering it for less.

This is not the same as the cruise line reducing the price of the cruise.

It's fairly simple... If you found a lower price you can mention it to the TA you booked with, and see if they'll match the price. If they aren't able to, you're far enough out that you can cancel, and then book with a new agent.

Though, you may want to be sure there were no cancellation fees agreed to with the first agency.

Hi Deja,
You also need to find out if the taxes and port charges are figured into the prices you just found, sometimes thats the whole difference. Some travel agencies will buy up group space on certain sailings and offer the discount to you, it could be that you found some and the cruiseline didn't really drop their prices. Yes, you could have to pay a cancellation fee, so be sure to talk to your travel agent and find out all the details.

Yes, you can also purchase the transfers through the cruiseline even though you didn't book the air portion with them. Sometimes, you will find, its actually cheaper to just get a taxi at the airport to take you to the pier, something else to check out. If you are cruising on Grand out of Ft. Lauderdale, the taxi price is very reasonable, the port is right next to the airport, so its only about a 10 minute ride.

Enjoy your cruises, sure wish I had 2 booked

Deja, I echo Kuki and Donna's statements. Worst case you just cancel and re-book, but be sure and check if they include port charges. That's how they do a lot of come-on fares.

On your other question, I just went Princess in February and I don't recall any $100 bonus from them doing things on-line.

Don't let it spoil your trip ... one way or another you got a great rate, but I agree with you, save where you can.

Called my agent today and decided to leave things as they are. It's not worth the hassle, and we are happy with the cabin we booked and don't want to take the chance of losing it should we cancel and try to rebook elsewhere. Plus, I've dealt with this agency before and they have always been good.

The TA explained exactly what you guys just did. Thank you very much for your prompt responses.

I'm just thrilled to be able to go on this ship in October! Deals or no deals, extras or whatever.

One thing to consider is how you booked your airfare. You said you booked yourself and not through the cruise lines which could be a problem if the cruise is cancelled for whatever reason. I remember a few weeks ago when one of the ships (Century, I believe) was limping back to port and skipping all the scheduled stops, they were going to drydock the boat immediately for repairs. They cancelled the following cruises and offered those passengers a full credit on their cancelled cruise plus a 50% discount on a future cruise. HOWEVER, those passengers that booked their own air fare and bought non-refundable tickets were SOL. They could not get their money back for the air tickets and had to either use them to vacation in Florida anyway or lose.

BTW, I never ask anyone else what they paid for a cruise since usually no one pays the same price and someone usually ends up disappointed in what they paid. Be happy that you're happy with what you booked.

That is good information to know. Since our cruise isn't until October we actually haven't booked our airline tickets yet. I will certainly check with Princess and do some comparisons.

We ended up needing to change the date of departure from October 20,2002 to October 27th. Same cruise itinerary, just one week later. There was no charge or penalty at all for making this change and we ended up in a cabin one catagory higher than what we originally booked.

Since I had been asking on the boards which balcony cabins on this particular ship people like the best, I was able to get a cabin, midship (which is important to me because of motion concerns) on the deck most people seem to prefer.

All is shaping up nicely! I have to agree with you- a bargain to me most times has little to do with the actual dollar amount. If I feel satisfied, happy and taken care of - it's a bargain!

Again, thank you for the information re: the airline tickets. It's definately food for thought.

I'm very excited about this cruise, as my first cruise was on the Carnival Spirit early April - novice cruisers indeed - and we are really looking forward to experiencing different cruise lines.

Congratulations on the "upgrade." And glad to hear you got a bargain. October and January are my favorite times to cruise, although I'll cruise anytime I get the chance!

Hi: wow...your first is on Carnival and now you are going on Princess. You will be amamzed. We did it in the opposite way. Princess then Carnival. Two different styled cruise line I think.

About comparing prices paid. I agree with all the above folks. It's like playing a slot machine and you are having no luck. When you get up to leave it, run. do not walk away. Do not look back else someone sits down and you see the first quater pay off big. Best not to think about it.

Have a great cruise. I love Princess.
