last minute cruises from Miami/Ft. Lauderdale

Has anyone out there actually gone to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale ports on Sat or Sun with a packed bag and gotten on a ship at a good pice? What's the likelihood of this happening? How much would you expect to pay for a 7 nt. Caribbean cruise?

We haven't actually shown up on the pier expecting to get a ticket, but we rarely book beyond 90 days because we've found the prices to start dropping as it gets closer to departure day. We usually book about 60 or less days in advance. But then we are very flexible about days and itineraries we sail.

I've often wondered why cruiselines don't have "standby" categories just to sell those last remaining cabins at a bargain price. Those of us close enough to drive to the ports would love to get those last cabins at rock bottom prices.

Thomas

Lilybug,
As Mike has pointed out, it won't happen. Many people have claimed to know someone who did this or know someone who's brother, best friend, cousin, etc did this but it simply will not happen since 9/11. Regs are there so that they can compare the manifest against known terrorists and thier alises etc. Another of the reasons this will not happen is that even if a passenger does not show up when the ship sets sail, they did purchase the use of this cabin and can and sometimes do show up at the next port of call to claim thier cabin. If a cabin is vacent they will usually take the chance to do a thorough cleaning and repair of anything that is out of place in this cabin that could not be done while a passenger is in there or in the few hours between sailings such as carpet replacement etc.

I think Mike is correct. They must have time to check the passenger manifest before sailing.

As for the price...........we always book the cheapest outside or balcony room on the ship and never pay more than $100 pp/day including port and taxes. Our upcoming cruise on the Sovereign is $84.75 pp/day. Yooooooohooooooo! That is $122 total savings over what we consider a bargain. It'll all end up on the craps table though.

Thomas

Thank you for all your replies, always a friendly bunch of folks. Was on-line last night and booked Century on 7/13 out of Ft. Lauderdale. If only they offered dining choices like some of the others. We sailed on Galaxy in Jan. and they still have the traditional dining seatings and formal nights. Well, will have to throw in some extra things - one of these days I really am going to "travel light"!

For your info, I booked a cruise at a reasonable price that leaves port from Ft. Lauderdale on July 20, 2002

One of the givens of a cruise is that everyone at your table wil claim to have paid less than you.

Have been on 12 cruises but never heard a discussion on HOW MUCH one paid for a cruise!
