Default Do I need a passport?

My husband and I are sailing to the Western Caribbean in Feb. with stops in Belize and Key West. Will we need passports for Belize? Or can we get by with our birth certificates? Any info will help. Thanks.

Your travel agent should know this. But it's just good sense to have a passport.

Suggest you go to the Chit-Chat for Cruisers board and scroll down to the bottom. Click on "Older Messages." Somewhere down on the second page (right now) is a string called "Got Passport?" Check it out.

Hi EMgrace,
Chances are you probibaly don't need a passport for those ports yet, not sure, but like Pam says, it does make good sense to have one. For myself, I would not travel anywhere with out mine, one of the best investments I've made :-)

Just in case you do decide to go ahead and get one, here is some info:

http://travel.state.gov/passport_easy.html

You also have plenty of time to get and fill out the application. You'll need 2 photos done when you turn in your application and they will also take your birth cirtificates, but they will come back in the mail along with your completed passport.

Pam is quite right... your t/a should have the answer to that right away for you... the answer being "no", you do not "need" one. A Passport is always the best.... and easiest, especially in these times of heightened security.

Ernie is correct. At the present time you do not need a passport to go to Belieze onboard a cruise ship as they have a special exemption just for them. You DO need a passport to travel to Belize by any other means or if you stay there more than 24 hrs. Now what would happen if something went wrong and you missed your ship or had to remain in-country for longer than that time i don't know but it could get very complicated. As always, best advice is to get a passport.

Little-known fact which Queeg and I discovered earlier this year. Even WITH passports, you can't drive a rented car into Belize from Mexico.

We really did NOT like those guys with guns.

See Queeg do a warp-speed three-point turn.

At the risk of sounding preachy, it's just plain stupid not to have a passport and try to "get by" with the birth certificate/photo ID thing.

For women, it's possible that the birth certificate name is not the same as that on other ID. Then you get into proof of marriage, name change, etc.

None of us can predict what will happen around the world in the near- or long-term.

Your passport is the best insurance you can have. GET ONE.

Whew. Did I make my point clear?

Thank you everyone for responding so quickly. I could see where the marriage/name-change thing could pose a problem, as well as security issues. We'll be getting the passports! thanks again.

Wise decision! Let us know how it all went... the cruise, that is. Enjoy!

My simple response is: If you have a passport you wouldn't need to ask this question regardless of any country you travel to.

Thomas

Thomas - couldn't agree more.

Can't understand people who resist investing in a Passport - there's no other ID that even comes close........and it's not like you have to renew it for every cruise.

For me, being without a Passport is like being homeless without money!
