I''ve got a 1-night pre-cruise stay at the San Juan Marriott thru Princess with transfers from airport/hotel and hotel/port. Our ship doesn't leave port until 11 pm on Saturday night. We would like to tour around San Juan during the day on Saturday before embarkation. When does embarkation begin for an 11 pm departure? What will we do with our luggage after we check out of our room until we are ready to go to port? Should we eat before we embark or will food be available on board at that hour? When will luggage arrive in our stateroom with this late of departure?
We've stayed at the San Juan Marriott several times. You can ask for a delayed checkout. In the event they cannot accommodate you, you can ask that the bell captain hold your luggage until such time as you are ready to leave the hotel.
All the cruises we've taken out of San Juan have left at night, but we've always boarded the ships around noontime. As far as eating goes, there should be a lunch buffet available from about 12 - 4 PM, and dinner should be served at the normal time. Enjoy your cruise!
Times I can't help you with. That is a very late sailing time???
"Restaurante Baru" is an incredible Tapas restaurant in Old Town. This is a beautiful small restaurant with incredible food and the best service ever. Everyone I have referred there raves about this place. We even walked there from the ship.
Rod, as mentioned to enjoy your full day in Old San Juan, check out of your hotel and have your luggage held for you. Take a taxi into Old San Juan or take a tour depending on how much you like to walk and explore. Old San Juan is a great walking city but it is hilly up to the El Morro fort which is not to be missed and explored. The walk is all downhill from there. You could probably book a good taxi tour for about $35 +/- and return to the hotel to pick up you luggage. Have the same driver wait and bring you to the pier which is about $10 +. Forget your paid transfer. Half the time the transfer taxi forgets you anyway! If you wish to visit a beautiful hotel the night you check in, don't miss a visit to the Wyndham El San Juan on the Isle Verde. It is great with many lobby bars, dancing to Salsa music, and a Grand casino plus a lot of restaurants.
I hate to sound like a paranoid nut.....but, I mentioned to my TA about having hotel or someone else looking after my luggage after we get off ship (if we have a late flight home). TA said NO WAY should we let the hotel or anyone else look after our luggage before boarding a plane because you will not go through it anymore before boarding the plane. TA said just take it to the airport and check it there, or take the tour that is offered as post cruise of San Juan and your luggage will be on the same tour bus that you are on. TA said: "Don't EVER leave luggage unattended or with someone you don't know. This is one of the specific questions the airlines ask....about leaving luggage unattended!" Sorry to say you can't trust people you really don't know anymore.
