Default San Juan

We are trying to plan a cruise over Christmas and want to know if everything will be open while in port. We are thinking about the Paradise which will put us in San Juan on Christmas Day. Any suggestions on cruises over Christmas would be greatly appreciated!

I would almost guarantee you everything in San Juan will be closed on Christmas day except the churches. I am surprised. Most Christmas cruises spend the holiday as a day at sea.

Hi ...

Hotels and their dining rooms/lounges will be open. I don't know about casinos in the hotels that have them.

The Catano ferry will probably be running as it's how many of the hotel workers commute.

Luquillo Beach MIGHT be "open".

I agree with Paul ... it's unusual for a ship to drop a boatload of passengers into a port on a "closed" day.

During the time that I lived in Mexico, I was surprised to find that Christmas Day itself was really quite anti-climactic and that many stores were open. I find the same to be true when Jose and I spend the holidays in Costa Rica. The big day to celebrate is the 24th, and everything shuts down early, around mid day, and the celebrations begin. There's evening or midnight mass, dinner at midnight, opening of presents.... Then everyone sleeps late on Christmas Day and just goes about their business. Since Puerto Rico is also predominantly Catholic, and part of Latin America, it wouldn't surprise me to find customs to be similar, but I don't have the first-hand experience to tell you that it will be so.

My ship will be in port Christmas eve and morning in Rio. I'm wondering if the usual tourist attractions will be closed because of the holiday and what's the best way to celebrate my first visit to Brazil. Any suggestions?
