We are going on the Voyager (4/13/03), so we'll be in Cozumel on Friday the 18th - do you know which pier the ship docks at and are there any car (jeep) rental companies within reasonable walking distance? Thanks
You can get a car rental right after you leave the pier area/shops, but believe me, you won't need one. Cabs run all the time, there are lots of them, and it is not recommended that you drive on the island. roads are OK, not that great, you are a short distance from San Miguel, and money wise, save yourself some $$. there are now bike paths along the main drag in Coz, where you can either do mopeds or regular bikes. But save yourself and do a cab. Bon Voyage, I'm jealous!!!
I think there are 3 piers in Coz so it depends on which one your ship gets. When we were there last year we rented a moped and drove all over the island. The roads are not that bad (I've been on worse roads in MX with a rental) and if it's safe enough to drive a moped then you are safer off in a car. Just always be aware of your surroundings. Cabs are always around and they are cheap. If you are looking to just go to a particular place and back then take the cab otherwise if you are adventuresome rent a car and see the island. Just be careful and don't drive like the locals do. Happy sailing!
Thanks for your input - we're still debating how much sightseeing we want to do as opposed to just finding a nice beach or park to hang out at for most of the day - if we just go to one place, then the taxi idea definitely makes sense. After you factor in the taxes and insurance, a small 4 person car goes somewhere around $55 for the day from what appear to be "reputable" rental companies.
On those excursion sheets I have, nothing is sail about car rentals, but my boss suggested renting Mopeds, cheaper, and easier to get around on.
