sailing out of San Juan

I can't decide between EOS from Miami and Serenade of the Seas from San Juan for our spring break 2004. 2 adults/2 children. Serenade is cheaper even with the more expensive air. They also have balcony rooms that have the 3rd pullman/foldout couch configuration. I am worried about sailing from San Juan. How is it sailing from San Juan? We just got back from Brilliance of the Seas and loved the ship. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Mimi

I'm not quite sure I understand exactly what it is that worries you about sailing out of San Juan. We've done it many times and have never encountered any problems. The airport is fine, as are many of the hotels. In fact, there are many beautiful resorts and fine restaurants to choose from. While Puerto Rico is not our favorite destination (we usually visit only pre- or post-cruise), it is the largest, most developed and richest island in the Caribbean. Are there places that are unsafe for tourists to go? Of course, but then there are unsafe places in most cities in the world. Common sense rules.
If the Serenade of the Seas cruise is attractive to you and the price is right, go for it. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by San Juan. As an aside, cruise ships usually leave the port of San Juan at night, which allows for a particularly picturesque view of the old city and lighthouse as the ship leaves the harbor.
Whatever your decision, enjoy your cruise!

Hi Mimi,
If you don't mind the longer and more expensive airfare, then I'd definitely cruise fromSan Juan. We recently cruised Radiance out of San Juan and had no problems. We used cabs to get to and from the pier and on the way back, only a 20 minute ride to the airport and of course we had plenty of time to begin with.

Doing a Southern Caribbean itinary is my favorite, go fo it!

No question in my mind. If airfare isn't a concern, then the only choice would be the southern cruise. We have done a southern cruise aboard the Grandeur and departing from San Juan was a breeze. Arrived a day early, spent the night at the Marriot which was very nice, then a quick taxi ride to the ship. Got there early, the boarding time was given as 2:00 but we got there at a little after 12:00 and walked right thru the check in. We were on the ship in 15 minutes from the time we got out of the taxi. It was fun seeing all those Carnival people waiting in line OUTSIDE their terminal building while we were walking right into the nice RCI airconditioned terminal. Did I mention it was sunny and hot that day? Once thru the check in and the photos we went to our cabin. Just before getting on the boarding gangway we saw some stores, so after dropping the bags off at the cabin, we went back to see what was there. Not really much interested me, except the liquor store. I don't/can't drink, but lots of other people looked like they could. They just bought it and carried aboard. There was no one checking. We bought so sodas for the cabin fridge.

To sum it up: San Juan is a recommended departure port.

Re: sailing out of San Juan

Mimi, just this morning I was thinking of contacting my sister about sailing from San Juan next April. I would be interested to know what kind of rate you got, and more importantly the airfare and from what city. I am coming from Charlotte and willing to drive several hours because this city is expensive to fly from. My sister is coming from Chicago. I've done 3 FL ports and our last was from CA which at that time I was going to do San Juan so that may be the next. Feel free to email me with the information if you don't mind.

Thanks, Diane

San Juan is a great port not only to sail from but to explore. The cruises sailing out of San Juan tend to be more port intensive with less sea days than those sailing out of Florida - that might be a consideration.

How close to the RCI port is the Hard Rock Cafe' ? Can we get off the ship and explore San Juan once we settle in and get our luggage in our rooms? AOS doesn't leave until 10pm Sunday night.

Hi Jay,
The Hard Rock Cafe is walking distance from the port, just a little ways from the Wyndham Old San Juan, just ask once you get off the ship, someone can direct you.
