Why does this article recommend Chichen Itza as a viable shore excursion during a port stop at Cozumel? No major cruise lines offer shore excursions to Chichen Itza from Cozumel, and it is really too far to consider visiting during a typical port stop without flying.
The article does mention a company that flies to ruins, but it really doesn't make it clear that you cannot take a ship-sponsored excursion to Chichen Itza.

Some ships offer a shore excursion. They ferry you from the ship as you pass by the mainland across from Cozumel. They bus is waiting and it is an all day excursion. They come back to the ferry dock and you ferry over to Cozumel to reboard the ship.
